🧵DISMANTLING DEMOCRACY I've been keeping track of Trump actions - now up to 192. Here, I dig into 69 actions specifically targeted at undermining democracy, rule of law & suppressing dissent. It's been 12 weeks of assaults on democracy. based on christinapagel.substack.com/p/a-republic... 1/18

On April 23rd the Ignaz Semmelweis Institute will kick-off with a scientific symposium. We are super excited about the program. Come and join! Register here: meduniwien.ac.at/web/en/ueber...

HHS Secretary RFK Jr. is a danger to the public’s health and should resign or be fired, says APHA. In just a few short weeks, his actions on vacccines, fluoride and other public health science have shown how wrong he is for the job. Read & share our statement: apha.org/news-and-med...

Particularly like the 'direct inverse correlation' bit. That *is* impressive.

🧵1/ A recent clash over sentencing guidelines in England & Wales might sound like dry legal stuff but it should be a flashing red light for public health, equality, and democracy. In a new piece @bmj.com Christina Pagel & I explain why it matters

A tariff increase from 0% to 10% is still massive. But everyone seems to forget about that. And the uncertainty / risk level when dealing with the US administration is also now huge.

RFK Jr says he was “not familiar” with the sweeping cuts to state and local public health programs. So- who is running the health & human services dept? www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/h...

why is *every* newspaper/programme running with the headline "tariffs are paused" when they haven't been. What's happened is that every country (except China) gets a flat rate of 10% for 90 days.

The White House. The actual White House. This is the attitude of every abuser, who is now fearful of the consequences of their abuse.

blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/09/... Covid/climate change are two sides of the same coin. A lot of money has been invested in denialism of this health risk.

Powerful words from @angierasmussen.bsky.social and @daltmann.bsky.social “An emerging virus can rapidly traverse the globe within days. Our viruses unite us, even when our politicians do not. 🧪

As the relative of someone who died of hospital-acquired COVID-19 at a time when UK hospitals and care homes had too little (and poor-quality) PPE, I am grateful to @goodlawproject.bsky.social for their work bringing these people to justice.

I am getting increasingly frustrated by Labour bigwigs speechifying about how the world has changed and we need to be bold and then... not being bold

Classrooms are a microcosm of society. If misogynistic behaviour is a serious concern in schools, then it’s a serious concern outside of schools (and online obvs). Why are the government not publishing wider guidance on misogyny and unhealthy relationships? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

It is really not “woke” to want cheaper, cleaner more efficient energy that doesn’t kill people by causing asthma, COPD, cancer and cardiovascular disease or drive up climate change consequences. As Trump continues to send America back to a depression, poor health and polluted land/air era. 😔

For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the message was lost. For want of a message the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all because that nail was made in China.

Delighted to hear that my MSc student Jupneet Singh has won a prestigious Soros graduate scholarship for New Americans ("immigrants and the children of immigrants") in the USA. This kind of philanthropy is needed more than ever. pdsoros.org/meet-the-cla...

This is brilliant news!

All this tariff stuff reminds me of when my 6 year old brother jumped into a milk float and drove it off down the street shouting wheee look at me, with glass bottles falling off the back and out the sides.

Is this a good time to recall that US trade restrictions (oil, steel, rubber) in Japan was widely seen as a contributor to attack on Pearl Harbour? Trade wars have consequences

The US is utter chaos. Complete and utter chaos, for at least another four years and probably long into the future. Any British government working in the national interest will be investigating how to quickly reduce our exposure to it.

#publichealth @who.int listed vaccine hesitancy among the top 10 threats to global health even before the #COVID19pandemic. www.who.int/news-room/sp... #peddky In 🇺🇸 , childhood vaccination rates declined during and after the pandemic, with increasing inequities in access and uptake

The capitalist system is based on a combination of trust & rules. Sure, it’s imperfect, but once the US economy becomes no more than a vehicle for insider trading on a massive scale, transferring wealth from middle class to the President’s friends, it’s finished. Not sure we’ve all realised

Not only do we have an epidemic of violence and misogyny against women and girls - but it’s getting worse. In 2022-23, reports of violence against women and girls accounted for 20% of all police-recorded crime in the UK. Govt policies have to do much more to combat sexism and misogyny in society.

Waiting for someone to live stream an orange next to a picture of the president, to see which lasts longer…

Very proud of my colleague prof Barbara Kasprzyk-Hordern and team here at @bathchem.bsky.social for their important work for future pandemics www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
