Theme 1: Weakening Democratic Checks and Balances.
Checks and balances on power include an independent congress and judiciary, independent oversight bodies and ensuring free and fair elections.
All are being attacked. 2/18
He is targeting anyone who tried to hold his 2020 insurrection and big election lie to account.
Congress has willingly ceded its authority. 3/18
Authoritarian regimes often start by targeting individuals: political opponents, whistleblowers, journalists, former officials. The purpose is both retribution and deterrence.
Trump is targeting anyone who thinks did him wrong 4/18
No one should be above the law, and everyone should have access to justice.
Trump is forcing law firms to do his bidding by choking their business; he is attacking the judiciary & flouting court orders. For political or $ gain he is not applying the law. 5/18
This last is heading for a consititutional crisis. 6/18
Protest, journalism, activism and public criticism are actively protected in healthy democracies.
In the US, suppression of dissent has started with foreigners, especially students, and university protests.
Visas are being revoked, surveillance is increasing. 7/18

The rule of law makes it crystal clear,
Obey Supremes or democracy disappears.
