Today's university in crisis is Kingston, which is cutting all the departments and subjects below, a savage retrenchment that won't even make them half of the £20m savings they need. Every day will be like this until something is done.

Which raises Q2: why do we all love talking about nostalgia? www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Bloody hell.

Our new maps launch today - now, crucially, with subject data from individual UK universities. This adds a new dimension to our cold spots mapping what students can study and where. The maps show a complex regional picture - let's get into it ⤵️ (1) www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/policy-and-r...

It's a bit of a rout in UK Higher Ed just now, and it's only just beginning really. What a complete and utter mess.

Applications for the International Fellowships 2025, run alongside the @royalsociety.org are still open. The scheme supports international early career researchers in fostering research expertise with UK partners over the duration of two years. Apply now: https://buff.ly/42Dbd0o

📢 The Discursive Construction of Migrant Identities co-edited with @drsimongoodman.bsky.social & Stuart Dunmore Very proud of this collection in which we have tried to shift assumptions around whose perspective we should analyse 1/4

Let's be honest about #Science. "We do not know we can only guess" (Popper) yet there is no other way. #falsification #corroboration Open research group meeting. 🕛Today 12pm Everybody is welcome t.co/ekkH9uFJF8

This should be changed asap. If we give someone refugee status, it can't be right to then refuse them route to become a British Citizen. To say they can have a home in our country, but never a place in our society and be forever second class. freemovement.org.uk/good-charact...

We keep talking about the power of words as linguists and educators but we're not the only ones who think words are important.

It would be excellent to hear some strategy on this from @teamlabouruk.bsky.social govt rather than euphemistic talk of 'difficult decisions' wrt destroying people's jobs and access to education

Some tips for reviewers... Don't just focus on the bad. What did you like about the paper? Be constructive - what can the author do to improve the paper? Be respectful, even if you didn't like the paper. If the paper is trying to be a square don't reject it because it isn't a circle.

More on #disinformation with major impact on #immigration discourses

#PresentationOfSpeakers Today we'd like to share that Charlotte Taylor @proftaylor.bsky.social from the University of Sussex @sussex.ac.uk will also join us for the #RC21 Symposium! 🥳 She will hold a talk on: 💬 "Fear and pride: Emotion talk in UK migration debates" Curious? 👉 go.fau.de/1begf

On immigration and disinformation - and how it feeds the migration myths

School report age 8 Geography and science Clearly a long history of not turning the conference paper into an article 😳

NEW: While responding to worst wildfires in the history of Los Angeles, FEMA employees were ordered to immediately change their vocabulary to call immigrants "aliens." "For Immediate compliance" they were told. Worker said it's "the most 1984 email Ive ever seen" www.404media.co/for-immediat...

If you are interested in the discursive process of #criminalization that the rise of 'illegal' plays into, I was commissioned to write this entry a few years ago. Wish it were no longer topical. [accessible version in reply] #migration www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edi...

Introducing my new project… Your Wrong (yourwrong.co.uk). It’s all about the language rules and judgements that appear in different forms of popular culture. Films, series, podcasts, music, books, even graffiti! I’d love your help to find examples!

'For the first time, there are now more commuter students in the UK...than traditional residential students.' This trend underscores the importance of the BA's Cold Spots data and maps, which you can access for SHAPE disciplines here: www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/policy-and-r...

NEW on Wonkhe: Susan Kenyon considers who commuter students are, what they need and why the sector should care. https://buff.ly/3Efudb5

Great to see this get attention. My work showed 'illegal' has been the strongest collocate of 'immigrants' in the Times newspaper since the 1970s Prior to that, the words most associated with 'immigrants' were: 60s: Commonwealth 50s: coloured 40s: illegal 30s: Jewish 20s: British 10s: Canada

I always say that every project needs a linguist. Today I'm the linguist at the launch of the EU-funded PROACT-EU RESPONSE project in Paris - on pandemic preparedness in Europe. Lancaster's role is to study attitudes towards clinical trials via corpus methods. www.eu-patient.eu/projects/ong...

Feedback all academics love to hear: "I thought I hated x but it's so interesting!" In this case, x was concordance analysis - fittingly enough given the upcoming Reading Concordances Symposium @rc21project.bsky.social
