In a two-party system, extremists can take power if they take over one of the parties. In a multi-party system, extremists are far more limited because they end up with a proportional number of seats and because moderate parties can exclude them. And #ProportionalRepresentation can get us there.

A two-party system becomes a one-party system all too easily. One party always has majority power, and they just need to change the rules to make it permanent. A multi-party system is much safer. No party ever gets majority power.
