Dogs should always be pet. But if I were a dev on that game I’d subtly boost loot drop rates for 5 minutes after petting a dog.

If you connect your Dualsense controller (It might need to be wired) to PC you can even use the adaptive triggers and enhanced haptics.

Which is wild to me because the pandemic showed there was real interest in these games, but there was nothing "new" to keep people in the genre. Meanwhile if you drop the word "live-service" people already roll their eyes.
