Congratulations to @bridgetdooling.bsky.social, professor of law at @ohiostatelaw.bsky.social ‬on her newest manuscript, Ghostwriting the Government buff.ly/5FXUbpN #WomeninAcademia #WomenAlsoKnowLaw

Add to the increasingly thick "shocking, not surprising" file. www.wsj.com/health/healt...

Along with @prmalone.bsky.social, @heidikitrosser.bsky.social, and several colleagues at Stanford, I filed this amicus brief on behalf of 363 law professors in support of Perkins Coie and the rule of law. We will file similar briefs for Jenner and Wilmer Hale law.stanford.edu/publications...

Delighted to share news--my essay with Eloise Pasachoff and Zach Price, “Appropriations Presidentialism," is forthcoming in Georgetown Law Journal Online! papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.... The draft is our attempt to explain a developing front in the fight for checks and balances. Thoughts welcome!

We may not know for decades, but this raises the question of whether chicken pox vaccine (approved in US in 1995) might reduce incidence of dementia.

Christine is one of the smartest, most thoughtful, and kindest bioethicists out there. A terrible loss for NIH. In another loss for research ethics, the new OHRP director got a RIF notice yesterday (in her role only since Sept) and I've heard SACHRP is eliminated (although it's still up online).

What a moment.

Medical product reviewers were spared during the layoffs at FDA, but cuts to support and policy staff likely will slow drug and device development and approval, hurting American patients. #healthpolicy #biosky #medsky insights.citeline.com/pink-sheet/a...

1/ I wonder if there's a complement to Mettler's _Submerged State_ thesis: the successful state thesis. In brief: American government has *in many ways* been so successful for so long that Americans have forgotten why they need it, making anti-government rhetoric more appealing.

This assault on the FDA conflicts with the goals of Make America Healthy Again and will almost certainly make our nation less healthy. We are already faring significantly worse than peer nations. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Noticeably silent amid the upheaval at HHS? Big pharma. Every new drug has NIH somewhere in its DNA--and NIH funding supports the training of their workforce. Now they're finding out FDA isn't safe, either. Wrote about how keeping quiet isn't working My latest @opinion.bloomberg.com (gift link):

"Turned away when badges didn't work." Just gratuitous cruelty to committed civil servants who've already taken so much abuse. The costs of these reckless cuts to all of our health will be vast. But the inhumane treatment of hard-working employees is itself a moral stain.

This is absolutely devastating for public health, for scientific integrity, for innovation, for all Americans. I can't string together more coherent thoughts - just absolutely devastating.

I’m no longer a federal worker, but I just joined @aaup.bsky.social which represents profs. I don’t come to this action lightly. I’ve seen the excesses of CBAs in my own career. And I don’t expect to agree with everything AAUP does or says. But, this is a moment for solidarity.

A must-read. 👇👇

It’s time like this that I’m especially excited about Trump and Musk trying to destroy NOAA and NWS

If you think that current cuts will only affect medical and public health schools, think twice. The whole university model, including college, is under attack.

Painful to read his letter, linked in this article. America & the world owe him a debt of gratitude.

Too principled and candid a person to last for long. Sigh.

Damn. www.wsj.com/politics/top...

Immediate thought: oh, fuck.

The contempt is hard to stomach. University research is not a hobby. It's work--work our country values as important to improving Americans' health, contributing to the economy, maintaining scientific supremacy. 'Entitlement' sure hits wrong.

This story is now outside our usual paywall. If you are impacted by these changes feel free to dm for ways to connect for further coverage.

This is such a great opportunity for junior health law scholars to get insightful feedback from thoughtful colleagues *and* it's tremendous fun. Apply! (Shout-out to my 2015 buddies, academic superstars @nicholson.bsky.social, @craigkon.bsky.social & @valerieblakerlah.bsky.social!)

From @wsj.com, RFK Jr./DOGE are planning to cut 10,000 technical & scientific experts from HHS on top of the 10,000 who have left amid the Trump administration's efforts to silence experts, shroud these agencies in further secrecy, & promote disinformation. 3500 or 19% of FDA will be fired. #MedSky

@jeremyfaust.bsky.social is being understated. And Tara Schwetz is an outstanding, dedicated public servant who has played a key role in major health advances. She deserves our appreciation, not whatever's going on here. open.substack.com/pub/insideme...

I salute the many Deans who signed this statement. At the same time, as a law professor I am embarrassed by the unwillingness of so many others, especially most of those at the top of the usual ranking lists, to join what strikes me as roughly the bare minimum of what should be collectively said.

This paper is the weirdest & most unsettling thing I've ever (co)written. & HUGE science questions—not just ectogenesis, but could a "brainless" animal survive? would it be a good model for a "real" animal? And ethics question, which are much bigger with humans. But I think it needs discussion.

Not just human and certainly not human first. Maybe never human. Potential for reducing suffering for lab animals and livestock - but lots of scientific uncertainties, as well as ethical ones...even if you never try it with humans.

As 23andMe files for bankruptcy and Wojcicki steps down as CEO (so she can bid) Anya Prince & my recent JAMA piece discusses what can - and should - happen to the over 1 million private genomes it has collected

Really excited about the new project @benjaminabarsky.bsky.social and I are starting! And a HUGE thanks to @lpeblog.bsky.social and @jamesbrandt.bsky.social for their support of this post on what we’re calling the new carceral public health law. lpeproject.org/blog/the-new...

Wow, @indivcentraloh.bsky.social really turned out a lot of folks - and notably, with the exception of a state senator or two, I don't see any local elected Democrats in these photos

“Keating’s initial attempt to reach NOAA’s congressional liaison failed because that person had been fired, and his second attempt to warn the interim administrator went unanswered, his office said.”

A pie graph worth keeping in mind as the NIH budget plummets jamanetwork.com/journals/jam... for 356 new FDA drugs approved

Fed cuts are hitting Ohio hard. Beware destructive #SB1 that aims to end DEI in Ohio public universities, ban faculty strikes, undermine collective bargaining, limit "controversial" speech, surveil faculty, classes, & more. Check out me & my class on Columbus NBC 4 🗃️ www.nbc4i.com/video/the-sp...

My new column @statnews RFK Jr.’s regenerative medicine roundtable on stem cell deregulation raises red flags www.statnews.com/2025/03/14/r... #stemcells #stemcell

A great conversation with Professor Dan Salmon, director of Institute for Vaccine Safety at Johns Hopkins, about vaccines & autism. @publichealthpod.bsky.social johnshopkinssph.libsyn.com/869-the-evid...

Not unexpected given the DHHS secretary's past statements, but this article by @leileiwu.bsky.social on Wednesday's roundtable on reducing stem cell regulation raises serious concerns: endpts.com/rfk-jr-conve...

@guttmacher.org has just released guidance calling on states to revisit abortion reporting requirements. I agree, but think more can be done in abortion-supportive states to shore up privacy and strengthen public health goals of collection before dismantling them. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

As an Oregon Trail Generation/Elder Millenial/Xennial/whatever I am - and more importantly person who only received one shot as a child - I have an appointment today to get my MMR booster.

The Trump/Musk/RFK administration is getting rid of many of my terrific former OGC staff. This is really an outrage. All it will do is make hospital patients and nursing home residents less safe -- and, ironically, make it harder for HHS to collect money it's owed. www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-...

USDA has eliminated two food safety advisory committees for microbiological contamination and meat inspection. Most recently, they had been reviewing regulatory approaches in response to the fatal Listeria outbreak from Boar’s Head meats and fatal Cronobacter contamination in powdered infant formula

Excited to see our piece out in JAMA. Adding to Patti's great thread, one point we emphasize that's often missing from these arguments is the role of a robust FDA effectiveness requirement in providing patients and clinicians with evidence they need to make informed treatment decisions.

In today's hearing, Makary didn't emphasize the importance of FDA upholding rigorous standards for demonstrating drug effectiveness. But that's what we need, as @pzettler.bsky.social, @rachelsachs.bsky.social, @stevejoffe.bsky.social, and I explain in this JAMA Viewpoint.
