But it also seems to trigger "left natalists" who are unwilling to accept that across cultures and with wildly different welfare states in play, the median couple does not want to have more than two kids. Some people really fetishize reproduction for its own sake and are mad this isn't universal.

If birthrates are unsustainably low in particular places in the world โ a real problem โ the easiest solution we have yet devised is to have people from other parts of the world move there. This track record of this approach has been phenomenal.

The leftist case for natalism via generous welfare policies is also a weak one; I support such policies of course, but the developed countries that have them tend to have declining populations anyway. When you give people true personal freedom they have fewer kids and that should tell you something.
