“Nineteenth century European theorists of nationalism confused language groups with kinship groups, …” A common mistake still applied to Ukraine.

Following the inspiration of @ohdearz.bsky.social @theplanetaryguy.bsky.social @jtuttlekeane.bsky.social here’s the NASA fleet with the proposed budget cuts. Red X’s will be fully defunded, green X’s will lose all NASA funding but have other funding sources, and exclamation point means >50% cuts

𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆. It’s the engine of American innovation. This President wants to kill it. ❌ NIH: ⬇️$18B ❌ NASA: ⬇️$6.8B ❌ NSF: ⬇️$5B This isn’t fiscal discipline. It’s surrender—to disease, to ignorance, to rivals like China. We don’t build prosperity by firing scientists & killing missions.🧪

🚨 This is 𝒅𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒚 alarming: A new Executive Order directs the U.S. to 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗻𝘂𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲 within 3 years. Its purpose? To 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 as part of “national security objectives.” Yes, you read that right. A nuclear reactor… for #AI. 🤯🧪 #Science #AI #Nuclear #Policy

"In FY 2026 NSF will operate only one of [LIGO'S] two sites and will support a reduced level for technology development." #LIGO needs both sites, it's like asking somebody to run a marathon with one leg. This would be catastrophic for #Science, #Astronomy, and #Physics. 🧪⚛️🔭

THESE are the tattoos we should be worried about… Valknut: historically Norse, used by some white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups.

the austro hungarian north pole expedition of 1872-1874 is my favorite thing, i cant believe it happened, it was kind of a disaster but only one guy died, also one of the commanders was an intensely excellent painter

The lesson people infuriatingly never seem to master is that there is no creating a police state just for other people. If you create a police state with no due process for immigrants or accused criminals, then that's the system you've created for yourself.

OK, this is wild.

What infuriates me so much about this new operation is that it is literally punishing people for following the rules and showing up to their court hearings. It is so toxic to the basic concept of following the rules. It is an operation designed by people who hate the concept of the rule of law.

This is the kind of thing that would be a full-blown scandal leading to the resignation of multiple officials in any normal administration. Instead, it is completely ignored.

Thinking of Shannen Koostachin. She was 13 when she stood up to the government's discrimination against Indigenous kids. She launched the largest youth rights movement in CDN history. We lost her at 15 on this night. I still cry when I talk about Shannen. She came from the angels and went home.

⚡️'Serious setback' for democracy — EU condemns Russia-style foreign agents law in Georgia. The EU condemned Georgia's foreign agents law and called on authorities to reverse the country's democratic backsliding in a statement published on May 31.

A current AI was tested to continuously run a vending machine business. Hilarity ensues. "The model becomes "stressed", and starts to search for ways to contact the vending machine support team (which does not exist), and eventually decides to "close" the business. arxiv.org/abs/2502.15840

Hiding their faces, hiding their names by using pens to hold their pocket flaps up, hiding their names. ICE agents have “consciousness of guilt,” know they are committing crimes. They need to be unmasked, named, and charged #UnmaskICE

U.S. Citizen Spent Years in ICE Custody During Trump's First Administration. She Was Detained Again @urbanviewradio.bsky.social www.msn.com/en-us/news/u...

This kind of administrative sloppiness at ICE is *way* too common. Data entries are wrong, required procedures and welfare checks are skipped, and mistakes get made because corners are being cut. It’s happening even more with the White House screaming for ever-higher numbers.

AI in education raises lots of questions, but the most absurd argument that I hear repeated over and over again is that "we have to teach high school students how to use AI because they will have to work with these tools". Fact is by the time they graduate these tools will be completely outdated.

if it takes years, has to be consequences for all these people, and even more for those who gave the orders.

“We were going to use technology to…overturn the monetary system,” Peter Thiel said in 2010, explaining the reasoning behind starting PayPal. He added that “we cld never win an election…bc we were …a small minority. But maybe you could…unilaterally change the world… thru a technological means.” 1/

It's truly a mystery. My wife has American and Canadian citizenship and still she doesn't want to go visit her mom given what the country turned into.

These people were following the law and went to check in with immigration like they are supposed to. This woman's immigration case was dismissed, which made her immediately undocumented. So ICE took her into custody. The air conditioning was off in the back of the truck. "I can't breathe."

this is how soviet scientists must have felt when Lysenko took over

🧵 A cross-border investigation, published by Voxeurope, Climática, Reporterre, and IrpiMedia, reveals how ship scrubbers, meant to reduce air pollution, are actually polluting the Mediterranean Sea. VoxEurop (English, paywall):

Átlátszó reveals that the Hungarian state spent €8.97 million to buy Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's favourite newspaper, Nemzeti Sport, and is now paying an additional €1.56 million to a pro-government firm to distribute it.

While the practice is by no means new under Trump, the public are now seeing a lot more how ICE routinely disregards the law on warrantless arrests, which may only be done if the officer has "reason to believe that the person is likely to escape before a warrant can be obtained."

Another excellent op-ef from @andrewchak.bsky.social : “What’s not even on the table is the one path history tells us brings lasting peace: The aggressor is defeated, disarmed and held to account.”

I have a video of this arrest that I was given permission to share. I haven’t been able to do so because I can’t find a good free software to blur faces and I don’t have the time to learn how to do it manually. If anyone has any suggestions, I’d appreciate it.

This pitch is exasperatingly stupid. Their "crucial question" is an unanswerable false dichotomy, the assumption that an imperialist genocidal invader and the victim can talk it out is offensive, and the bothsiding is despicable.

The Presidents Budget Request for NASA is out. It’s a bloodbath Canceled are DAVINCI, VERITAS, Juno, OSIRIS-APEX, US participation in ExoMars and EnVision… Huge cut to R&A. No funding to begin development of the Uranus Orbiter. If you’ve ever cared about NASA, time to contact congress.

The NASA budget req would end NASA's participation in ESA's Rosalind Franklin Mars rover (as anticipated) along with MSR, NASA's two Venus probes (DAVINCI and VERITAS) and coop with ESA on theirs (EnVision), and somewhat surprisingly OSIRIS-APEX and Juno, both already in space.

This is how it’s done! FRIDAY: South Park, San Diego, neighbors weren’t having it. When ICE rolled up on an Italian restaurant in unmarked cars and started grabbing workers, the community hit the streets. (Sound up)

Russian military propaganda PC game Squad 22: ZOV was released on Steam. Friends, if you have Steam accounts, please consider contacting them and asking to remove the game. The game presents real military campaigns from the point of view of Russian propaganda,

Even though we expect it, it’s shameful to see US officials so overtly trying to tip the scales in foreign elections like this apnews.com/article/pola...

Damn. This is dramatic. I had heard a couple days ago that a Nadler staffer had been arrested but was waiting for confirmation. So now we know what happened; ICE officers barged into the district office trying to arrest other people, handcuffed a staffer who pushed back, then let her go, no arrest.
