Based on a simple search, 44 states give their executive some kind of partial veto power. I guess it's not as uncommon as I thought. I still remember when a federal line item veto was created and ruled unconstitutional. I'm surprised that the state ones have withstood scrutiny.

You can't appeal discovery. The judge avoided that possibility with this order.

Guess which part of the government is in charge of arresting and imprisoning people charged with criminal contempt. The DoJ. No judge wants to give an order they know will be disobeyed. The goal here seems to be giving the government enough rope to hang themselves.

Do you need that even if you've been issued a passport before? My post was about a renewal, where your current passport provides evidence of citizenship and name changes.

If it expired less than five years ago, the only documents you need to submit are the currently expired passport and the renewal form.

One of my senators (both confirmed no votes) posted that the Senate phone system is overloaded about two hours ago.

If you're an Apple user then this might be for you. www.clicks.tech It's a keyboard case for iPhones that passes through the USB-C port. It doesn't have any other ports but it does have a Blackberry style keyboard. Unfortunately, I haven't seen this kind of thing for any Android devices.

Like this USB-C hub? The device you speak of already exists. I own two of them.

I wouldn't say that. Smartphones existed in 2005 (I owned one) but, the iPhone and knowledge of smartphones by the general public didn't happen until 2007.

I'm with you in theory but, I don't think we'd like a "President Vance" any better.

That asteroid is small enough that, if it does hit Earth, the impact zone will be small enough to be evacuated if necessary. It's big enough to cause a city to have a very bad day but not big enough to harm the world at large.

Too many people decided not to vote. Look at the vote totals from 2020 (154.6 million) compared to 2024 (152.3 million). The difference between the two seems small but you must remember that there were more eligible voters in 2024 than in 2020 too.

I don't even get why there was a rules argument against expanding the courts. There's nothing unconstitutional about adding more justices. You just need the President to nominate them and the Senate to confirm them. For Supreme Court justices, you even only need a simple majority in the Senate.

In xkcd, the alt text is another part of the joke rather than a simple retelling of the content of the picture. For example, the alt text of this comic is, "It was great until my thumb slipped and I accidentally launched my telescope into the air at Mach 8."
