In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court held that age verification for explicit sites is constitutional. In a dissent, Justice Elena Kagan warned it burdens adults and ignores First Amendment precedent. www.wired.com/story/us-sup...

This is amazing and brave. They tried to officially ban Pride after trying to kill it with a million pricks. The Project 2025 playbook has been field tested.

My statement with @cmalexaaviles.bsky.social on Senator Gillibrand’s racist, Islamophobic comments about @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social.

Seeing people cite what they deem antisemitism to justify xenophobia/Islamophobia is enraging both because it’s wrong in and of itself and because the idea that one form of hatred can be fought by boosting another is so totally, completely backwards. But then actually fighting hatred isn’t the point

If you like queer books about horny disaster friends and sketchy TV executives and a random from Indiana that never intended to become famous - @erincmcrae.bsky.social’s and my Love in Los Angeles book series is on sale for $2.99. Please heed the warnings. www.amazon.com/Love-Los-Ang... #books

Two things can be true: that Kirsten Gillibrand is an opportunist who doesn’t care about women and not-so-secretly harbors racist beliefs; and that Gillibrand correctly read the tea leaves with regards to Al Franken’s eight accusers, and people just never heard the “eight accusers” part.

Hell Gate is amazing. Lander is amazing. Adams is at least as corrupt at Cuomo and much much weirder (in the bad way). Mamdani is gonna win and business folks are “gonna leave New York” the same way you’re gonna “boycott that bodega” for about six hours after some minor tiff with them you started

"They lit $20 million on fire, and all it did was boost Zohran's numbers. And in no small part because they corrupted their own souls by supporting a person they know to be a corrupt, abusive asshole. What are they gonna do now?" @bradlander.bsky.social, the man you are. (via @hellgatenyc.com)

“The subway’s just a thing the state steals money from. It goes places?” - Andrew Cuomo, probably

As big as the Mamdani win is, Landers ascent is in some ways even more significant for the national Democratic Party. Most Dem electeds know that they don't have what Zohran has. But most can at least imagine themselves as a Lander.

the thing about New York is that most New Yorkers aren't from here: whether foreign or from somewhere else in the US, people come here, do stuff for a while, and then most leave. Sometimes stuff is working up from deliverista to restaurant owner sometimes it's being a trader bro after college.

It’s not JUST that right-wing fascists SAY they want the whole internet to be child-appropriate — it’s ALSO that they think all us people of other sexualities, religions, and races are inappropriate by default and this saying is how they start to erase our rights.

The difference between this and Nazi propaganda against Jews is that this is AI-generated.

I’m GenX. I’ve been mentally Tetris-ing spaces into maximally efficient nuclear fallout shelters since I was 7.

ICE is now changing tactics and arresting people who have been granted asylum hearings.   This is both a violation of US & international law that demands immediate attention from all New York elected officials & underscores the urgent need for legal service providers to be at all of these cases.

people: mamdani is going to turn NYC into a theocracy!!!! SCOTUS: it's ok if ur religion thinks being gay is evil and don't want ur kids to read about it in school

if constitutional rights only apply to individuals or states that have sued for relief, you don't actually have constitutional _rights_, you have _privileges_ that can sometimes (but not always) be secured for you by your lawyer

This is so true. 99% of book bans have the intended effect: you never hear about those books again. The 1% of banned books that become infamous bestsellers elsewhere are not the norm.

The left better start figuring out how to weaponize today's decision rather than just (rightfully) criticizing it. - Go back into Judge Kaczmaryk's court to dissolve all of his nationwide orders. - Pass gun bans and insist any order applies only to plaintiffs.

The Supreme Court clearly believes that lower courts will act to block the birthright citizenship EO through other means (including class actions) in the next 30 days, and therefore feels like it's okay partially staying these injunctions. But man, they are playing with fire.

I can’t speak to the legal issues. I can definitely speak to this administration is going to do terrible shit that’s even worse than we’re currently imagining because that for sure is a reliable pattern

Good fucking God, this Haaretz story Like, I don't even know where to begin TW: goddamn genocide archive.is/3LjoW

New outlets are literally giving more smoke to a candidate for A LOCAL ELECTION who wants to pilot 5 state owned grocery stores, fix vendor licenses and raise taxes on the rich by 2% then Trump literally doing fascism

I feel like I'm losing my mind. Here is the transcript of what Zohran Mamdani actually said about the phrase "globalize the intifada." This is his "refusal to disavow it." This is what has people terrified. Just fucking read it. Source: podscripts.co/podcasts/the...

i’m telling yall, get whatever vaccines you need now bc there’s no guarantee they’ll be around later

It should go without saying but historically people who propose denaturalization are not, as my grandfather would say, good for the Jews

Do y’all not see that these attempts to make Mamdani a Jew vs Muslim issue is CLASSIC white supremacy pitting minority groups against each other in order to divide us because we are very dangerous to them when we’re in community?? Are y’all for real gonna fall for that shit!?

we ship everywhere! booksmith.com xoxo

This racist notion that ethnicity overrides all thought is embedded in American behavior and I think this NYT article is broadly anti-Semitic. Being Jewish doesn't equate with support for Israel and criticizing the state of Israel doesn't equate to hating Jews.

It is utterly wild to me how resistant a huge number of people seem to be to the idea that one can be an antisemitic Zionist, especially given how much of the US government is run by them

First of all, incredible concept for a rom com. Second of all, HELL YES. This guy has been begging to star in a RomCom for ages. He is an adorable person. This is gonna be great I’m so happy for him.

2031 is a long time to wait for Senator Brad Lander.

Woo! We lost power! We have no estimate for restoration!

I've written a bunch about how conservatives reliably assert, whenever Democrats take office in New York, that *everyone* is leaving. (Current pop.: 8.2 million.) I think it's a throwback to white flight ooga-booga from the 60s and 70s.

Two years ago I interviewed a 31-year-old NY state assemblymember about a 7-year-old girl killed by an SUV driver in his district. I hung up the phone, astonished that I'd talked to a legislator who so thoughtfully articulated what actually needs to change on our streets. He'll make a great mayor

scientists consistently found that consumption of ice cream led to reduced risk for t2 diabetes and insulin resistance. They didn't want to believe this and buried the data in favor of yogurt when they published. Multiple scientists have tried to disprove the data since & it backfired every time.

The Times could have tried talking to ANY of the actual Jews or Jewish orgs involved in Jews for Zohran! There were many many many — and highly visible. And it’s dangerous malpractice for the NYT to not include us for the sake of an inflammatory binary.
