Still time to fill in this consultation - with handy tips from ALCS as it's a bastard to fill in otherwise (I filled it in before any guides were online and hoooo boy).

I'm really looking forward to speaking with these brilliant people about "L2" translation in Norwich on 27th March. Is it still a fraught topic? What are the politics of it? Really keen to explore these and other questions. www.uea.ac.uk/groups-and-c...

Random tenuous claim to fame of the day - John Lubbock at the bottom of this list was my great-great-grandfather and Darwin's nextdoor neighbour

#BristolTranslates is now open for applications and I’m leading the DE-EN group! Am looking forward to meeting participants for the German to English workshop- to apply, go to: www.bristol.ac.uk/sml/translat...

Wondering what people call the game of "it" (or "tag" or "chase") nowadays, and how regional these terms are. In London in my day, we played "it"... #amtranslating

Hurrah for Kett's Books again!

#Literary #translation: Applications for the Summer School at University of East Anglia are now open. Deadline for applications Sunday 16th March 2025. www.uea.ac.uk/groups-and-c... via @uniofeastanglia.bsky.social #xl8 #literature #summerschool #langsky

A beautiful Norwich morning on a riverside stroll with Son2 today. So nice to see the sun!

Sigh, complaint from the school that Son2's attendance has dropped. Yeah, he's been ill. If only we'd managed to learn from the whole pandemic thing that coming into school/work ill and spreading germs around is a bad idea...

It's always weird to be back on the UEA campus, but I enjoyed leading a workshop on translating puns for the current MALT students yesterday evening and I hope they had fun too...

The timeless poetry of GDR football team names. If you start chanting the Cottbus team name at the beginning of a match, you might just about finish it after 90 minutes (+ injury time).

Oh, the consultation is pathetic. You should still go fill it out and say no to their incredibly bad idea, though.

"Die Zeit stoppen" is a new bit of denglisch for me. Not to stop time, but to time something with a stopwatch... #denglisch #amtranslating

Good morning Bluesky! Walker Books are here and we're ready to recommend your next read. What are you reading this grey Tuesday morning? #WalkerBooks #Booksky

go.bsky.app/82DASfe My little starter pack is growing.

I have a folder called "nice things" on my computer, and any time anyone says anything positive about my work, I put it in the folder to look at when I'm feeling discouraged or wallowing in imposter syndrome. It's honestly been so motivating and helpful to my mental health. Would recommend.

A thing about language that a lot of people don't know is that you can dislike a usage intensely – a pronunciation, a piece of grammar, etc. – without presuming to reject it on behalf of all people, in all places, for all time

It would be nice if I could stop leaving reviews that say "needed a stronger edit" but honestly I think a lot of people including editors no longer grasp what a strong edit *means*.

I need to set out a ST extract with hyper-literal gloss and plain meaning in the TT in a Word doc. Anyone know a good way to do this? Am I going to have to muck around with tables?

Great thread on deverbalization! When I lecture my students on this, I describe it as stripping the J-words away, uploading the meaning they contain to a cloud of pure meaning above your head, and then downloading that meaning into English. I find the image of the cloud helps, like a stepping stone.
