My PI let us know today that the study section she was on had been cancelled - and she's certainly not alone. I don't know if this hold on the FR is circumventing the letter of the law or simply the spirit, but either way it's like a plastic bag over the head of American research science.

Just boosting the love for the VEC - I've been working with them for a while now and they do phenomenal work!! Important to have good sources for critical information in the current climate.

This commission statement refers to people with Autism, ADHD, asthma, auto-immune disease, and chronic illness as a “dire threat to the American people and our way of life”. This is a manifesto against disability. This is the language of eugenics.

Here is the pre-RFK vaccination schedule for your kids. Please download it before he is confirmed and changes/deletes it. Give it to your pediatrician and say this is the schedule you want your kids on. Making this my pinned post.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania has indirect rate of 70%, but they probably didn’t want to list that atop Harvard because defunding a children’s hospital might be perceived as problematic. This is devastating

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

No study section...no grant reviews No grant reviews...no grants awarded No grants awarded...no research No research...no functional NIH

eugenics leads to fascism if you gleefully ripped off your mask when you were lied to that the pandemic is over (spoiler: it’s not), you own this, too disabled people told you where this was headed over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. you didn’t listen.

Remember when the pandemic began and everyone started accommodating remote work? Everyone began showing brand new movies and live concerts streaming? Disabled people had been fighting for this for decades. Now it’s all taken away. It’s not that they can’t accommodate us, they just don’t want to.

You do not have to consume every single tiny piece of bad news in order to be a good person. It’s ok to miss things. Traumatizing yourself isn’t the same as activism. Bearing witness to the point that you’re paralyzed with fear and horror and fury isn’t going to help us get through this.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is bragging about distributing N95 masks. Yet, just 6 months ago Bass proposed a ban on masks in LA.

If you are a HCW and you are not wearing a mask at work right now, what the hell is wrong with you? Please tell us. #medsky

N95 masks protect against wildfire smoke, airborne viruses, and more. They are an essential public health tool. Like condoms and many other public health tools, the government should make N95 masks free and easily accessible to the public throughout the year.

How to protect your health from wildfire smoke: Evacuate if active fire is too close Wear a high quality mask with headstraps; N95s are great, P100s are most protective Stay indoors, and close your windows and doors Run air purifiers on high to filter smoke that seeps inside

Possibly the best clap back against ignorant antivaxxers.

Hey, democrats? I don’t want to hear the words “solidarity” or “inclusion” if you mean “except with disabled people during a pandemic.” You are adults and you can wear a mask to the grocery store and not infect anyone this year.

It is truly wild that it is estimated that more than 20 million people died of Covid and the prevailing vibe is that the world overreacted. That is an astonishing toll! More people died of Covid in the US than in the Civil War. www.pbs.org/newshour/hea...

Covid is not over and masks are one of our best tools to avoid infection. Mask bans are ableist, discriminatory and would mark a return to ugly laws. Anyone willing to shove someone in front of a train is not going to reconsider just because their mask is illegal. 🧵

Well the slope from “let the elderly and disabled die of COVID” to “let’s trash all the rest of our ethics, morals and laws” was basically a short walk on a flat path wasn’t it?

Wholeheartedly agree. Survived and just barely at that. Things will only continue to get worse as access to healthcare diminishes and I go into the 21st year waiting for a treatment to be developed. Definitely not feeling very celebratory.

It's wild this was said in the past tense, as though COVID isn't ongoing. People upset about those who decided not to give a shit about the pandemic in 2020 lacking the self awareness to realize they are perpetuating the exact same behavior by not giving a shit about the pandemic in 2024 is ironic.

@who.int Director-General's remarks at a media briefing on 10 December 2024: "We cannot talk about COVID in the past tense. It’s still with us, it still causes acute disease and Long COVID, and it still kills. The world might want to forget about COVID-19, but we cannot afford to."
