🚨 Many NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are being cancelled for Summer 2025. www.reddit.com/r/REU/commen...

Although we are not federally funded for this summer, WE WILL STILL RUN The National Summer Undergraduate Research Project (NSURP) in 2025. We remain committed to the work that needs to be done and will continue to meet people where they are. 1/4 nsurp.org

Good morning. The dance, whatever that means to you, is worth fighting for. “During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, we buried our friends in the morning, protested in the afternoon and danced all night. The dance kept us in the fight because it was the dance we were fighting for.

Let's just say it gets bigger everyday... @standupforscifr.bsky.social We're doing this for the next generation of scientists. To uphold the integrity of science, protect its accessibility, and ensure its benefits serve all people. Join us. @standupforscience.bsky.social

In today's episode of doomerism isn't a strategy, here's a list of things you can do today to make the world around you suck a little bit less: Pick ONE thing and do it. bsky.app/profile/itsa...

I gave a talk about this book in 2023. rarely do scientists think abt their work as activism. in doing so we don’t allow ourselves to use the tools that people before us have mastered and shared. When you do the work w/o the label, you’re just taking on the load without the tools to handle it.

Some good news: @hannahhrncir.bsky.social ‘s primary PhD paper is finally online! This study lays the groundwork for a lot of technical and conceptual things the lab is currently working on, including light sheet microscopy for imaging entire biliary trees in mouse liver: rdcu.be/d90Br 1/4

Alice Ball was an African American chemist who earned her MSc in chemistry. She worked on a method to treat leprosy (Hansen’s disease). scientificwomen.net/women/ball-a... #28DaysOfBlackSTEMHistory #BlackHistoryMonth

🚨 NIH funding changes threaten #GIResearch labs and the future of GI patient care! 🚨 AGA President Maria T. Abreu calls for action. Share your story about how these changes impact your work. Let's protect the future of digestive disease treatment! https://buff.ly/40WPmyC

Just got word that our Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) Grant was being canceled. All 100+ institutions. So even private funding is susceptible to this administration’s unraveling of DEI initiatives

Ronald E. McNair: Father, Husband, Physicist, NASA Astronaut, Pioneer in the Field of Lasers (SO COOL). We tragically lost him in the tragedy of the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle. He was selected to become part of NASA group 8, the first class that included both women and minorities. 🧵 1/4

Reminder! Science IRL mini-grant applications are due February 14! These grants are to support IN PERSON science communication projects in the US that reach science disinterested people, and ideally encourage concrete action in the audience. Apply here! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Here’s the web archive’s most recent snapshot (1/24/2025) of this page: web.archive.org/web/20250124... Notice how WIDE RANGING and contextual this notice is: it includes socio-economic diversity as well as racial and gender diversity. This administration’s actions are blatant overreaching

I cannot stress enough how important private funding will be for underrepresented (UR) scientists for the next 4 years. NSF and NIH fund summer research opportunities for UR undergrad students in STEM, mentoring programs starting in high school, funds for UR PhD students, & more.

One of the best things you can do right now is read books. Buy them. Borrow them from the library. Gift them. Read history. Read fiction. Read science writing. Read anything that shows you the world is bigger than what fascists say it is. Read to remember why your resistance matters. 📚💙

💯 The vital importance of this fact cannot be understated when building broad coalitions of support: Trump’s gutting of federal DEI programs will hit rural poor communities

Getting rid of diversity supplements is devastating. I run a seminar series for up and coming scientists. One thing I can do to help is to ensure this series represents the full diversity of the scientists in our field. Pass this along and help us make that possible. bsky.app/profile/mike...

I’m really proud to announce the 2025 Cancer Metabolism Showcase and Workshop, May 5th and 6th, 9:30 AM - 3 PM EST. This year, our Keynote Speaker is Dr. Jeffrey Rathmell from VUMC. I'm excited to come together, talk science, and support researchers in our field. www.cancermetabolismshowcase.org

I just reached out to my senators about the NIH situation. If you need to find out how much impact NIH has in your state in terms of dollars in and their economic impact here's a link: www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...

I hope you will join @lydiafinley.bsky.social and me for two days of great science on metabolic support of development and cell fate. Deadline for scholarships and short talk abstracts is Feb. 6.

If you are female PhD faculty in #GIresearch ( #basicscience or #translational), we invite you to join WINGS, Women Innovating in Gastrointestinal Science, a community for career development, mentorship & networking. Please fill out the form on our website and RT! bit.ly/4fHBWfj #GISky #Gastrosky

Delighted for my first Bluesky post to be in celebration of the work of Ronnie (@nightscientist.bsky.social) — can’t say enough about his talent & creativity! If you’re interested in the link between dietary fructose and cancer, check out his paper. #metabolomics www.nature.com/articles/s41...

My outpatient hysterectomy turned into an 8-hour ordeal and 5-day hospital stay due to complications including a bowel tear. I’m grateful for the capable team I had who saved my life, and that I wasn’t saddled with paying for hours of unanticipated “extra” anesthesia by an evil insurance company.

Undergrads, looking for a summer research opportunity in cancer biology? Consider applying for a CARSIP position! Details below 👇🏼 Please [re] circulate widely 🔁!

PIONEERS When I assumed the position as Director of NIGMS in 2003, Dr. Zerhouni's project for stimulating activities across NIH, The NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, was under active development. The Roadmap included a range of different funding opportunities. 1/n www.science.org/content/arti...

🧪TLDR: "Program leadership must work to incorporate the needs of their grad students into practice, even if their suggestions seem too unfeasible to implement. To do otherwise is to continue dismissing and discounting the dreams, voices, and desires of the communities we serve."

🧪 Grad students and postdocs, this is your #AcademicAuntie reminding you that now more than ever, organizing locally and building community with each other will be crucial for solidarity, support, and labor protections. This article is fantastic, and contains a helpful and sensible list of accommodations that can and should be made for disabled people at conferences. Absolutely going to implement as many of these as possible for the UK NMR managers meeting at the UCL School of Pharmacy in June. #DisabledInSTEM

At a recent conference, I was in a panel where many of us raised the idea that changing the reward structure in academia is the clearest path to achieving greater equity. I also suggested that mentoring should be added as an area of excellence. Later, someone asked me how could that be done? 🧵

I started a list of MOSAIC scholars to help find and support each other. I'm sure I've missed many people, lmk if you want to be added! go.bsky.app/9Ui711k

Hello to so many new followers! We recently received fundable scores on 2 R01s and are actively recruiting multiple postdocs. The broad theme of the lab is cancer cell metabolism, and I tailor projects to the postdoc’s scientific interests and career goals. See more: Airdlab.com
