I saw it at a sneak preview months in New Haven before its premiere. I was disappointed when the title came on bc I was hoping it would be Day of the Locust. I got over my disappointment within 2 minutes

A great movie. It shows you how to see art in a fresh way while having a moving human story.

Glad you liked it
The bittersweet ending is unexpected and brilliant

Have you seen DeSica’s Miracle in Milan? It’s a pretty wonderful combination of Clair like romantic fantasy with Neo realism and is unique and moving

Have you watched The Holly and the Ivy? I saw it for the first time last December on TCM and thought it was excellent

Saw ‘April’ at the Lumiere and highly recommended it. Riveting. I did enjoy seeing these bleak Eastern European movies more when I could say at least it doesn’t happen here. Now this film could take place in most red states.

He made a lot of famous movies but I always found him second tier. Good, not great. Podcast You Must Remember This has a great recap

I didn’t think anything could be worse about ‘The Fifth Element’ than Chris Tucker’s performance but that story wins

Good one. But it’s a remarkable movie and I usually don’t like the director

Great, great season.
For me, it’s Dead Blondes. Gloria Grahame is priceless

So sad that the season is ending. What a great podcast and such a welcome break from the current world.

Also ‘Resurrection’ which is more a psychological thriller and should have gotten Rebecca Hall an Oscar nom

The Coffee Table
The blackest of all black comedies. First 20 minutes are amazing

Possibly his best film is the difficult to see ‘The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz’. Richard Dreyfuss gives a great 70’s anti-hero performance right before he made Jaws

Tried rewatching it recently
It’s basically a long commercial without a product to plug. Unwatchable despite the stars

I have never seen a movie like this so politicized. This is the internet at its worst.

A rare error
Terrence Stamp was in Billy Budd, not Billy Liar. Great show, as usual

The absurdity of both Conclave and The Brutalist is that these rich, powerful, corrupt men can be affected or swayed by the power of one speech. Both seem like complete fantasy in the Trump world.

If you take away the final twist, Conclave could have Oscar bait anytime in the last 60’s years. I can see it with Burton directed by Jewison in 1968.
