Where is data viz going? @abmakulec.bsky.social & @elijahmeeks.bsky.social lay out a compelling treatise in their "4th Wave" of data viz series -- shared language, non-traditional forms, trust, complexity, literacy & ethics. Many overlaps with my own arguments 👏🏽

Aaaaannd I've got a new go-to example of the rhetorical power of visualization being used in ways that legitimize extreme positions 🤦🏽‍♂️

Volodymyr Zelensky's Oval Office visit ended early when Donald Trump and JD Vance began angrily yelling at him. Here's why women like Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton are too emotional to be president.

My book "Community Data" is finally available in the US! Order now if you want to push your data storytelling beyond the visual. Buy it now at your local bookstore, or ask your librarian to order a copy. communitydatabook.com

Hope to see friends, new and old, at @ire-nicar.bsky.social in Minneapolis next month! I'll be speaking on the "Tools, tips and tough lessons for teaching data journalism" panel with @mattwaite.bsky.social, Aarushi Sahejpal & Maggie Mulvihill.

Data can be used to give community voice, bringing people together for sense-making and storytelling. Thanks Lina Giraldo for inviting @kanarinka.bsky.social and I to share some examples from our work at Emerson earlier this month.

Fighting fascism is serious and important work right now... BUT it should also be fun (and funny) 👏🏽🤣👏🏽🤣👏🏽🤣

Boston friends: I'm speaking at MIT CSAIL about my book "Community Data" on Tuesday. Come hear (and question!) my arguments for a broader data sharing toolbox of techniques, beyond the visual. Hope to see some of you there 🎉 (thx for the invite @crystaljjlee.com)

I was at a punk show in 83 where a skinhead jumped up on stage and gave a Nazi salute. The bass player hit him with his bass, knocking him into the crowd and 150 people collectively hauled his ass out of the venue and threw him in the mud. This was the right and only appropriate response.

Weekend read: Protections against AI company scraping activities have major secondary impacts on media researchers. We need official data access carve-outs, and protections for "unpermissioned" research. More from my friends at @idpiumass.bsky.social :

Save the date 🪘+📊: first performance of my *live sonification* "Data Drums: A Rhythmic Call to Climate Action" will be at the Center for Transformative Media "Media in Motion" event. 3/28, early evening. Details to come. Register: www.eventbrite.com/e/media-in-m...

"Authoritarians try to crush independent referees and civil society institutions, including news organizations, universities, statistical agencies and central banks." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/15/o... Grouping newsrooms with central banks, universities, the Bureau of Labor Statistics gets it right.

Submissions for Sigma Awards in data journalism due Feb 28. Wonderful to see @gijn.org taking this valuable program over. I use award winners as examples every time I teach data journalism. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 https://gijn.org/stories/2025-sigma-awards-open-hosted-gijn/

The only way I can interpret the GOP's actions is that they are 100% certain they will never face another democratic election again. They hit the shore and burned their ships.

So many inspirational creative data projects and people influenced (& are included in) my book Community Data. Prepping early "thank you" copies to mail them; something about the physical copy feels right as a small token of gratitude. Official US release data Feb 28! https://www.communitydatabook.…

With Trump + the NFL likely to turn today’s Super Bowl into at least some degree of fascist spectacle, it’s worth remembering Colin Kaepernick (@kaepernick7.bsky.social) literally gave up his career to challenge the regime’s white supremacist project the first time around. Solidarity to the GOAT.

Universities need to read the room ASAP - the new US regime sees us as an enemy. Start marketing to show how higher-ed drives economic innovation, entrepreneurship, job growth, "beating" China, the "American Dream", ... Don't cede the narrative. Start playing offense, dammit.

Last week I gave a little introductory talk at a Wikipedia conference: when national news makes you feel overwhelmed/powerless, it's not "quitting" if you decide to tune it out and make a difference *locally*. @janus.bsky.social does a better job at tapping into that feeling, I think. @404media.co

Touch your data to understand it better. That's the advice I take from this recent paper from U Minnesota team evaluating same map in 3D, VR, and 2D. Open-ended responses hint at power of sculptures beyond limited metric of task success. https://doi.org/10.1109/TVCG.2024.3456377

Much-needed rethinking from Navajo Nation leader about US dietary guidelines, which for FAR too long have favored meat and dairy milk. I still remember the milk propaganda all over my school. I added my public comment in support. #lactoseintolerant https://www.statnews.com/2025/01/22/dietary-guidel…

Weekend read: @mmasnick.bsky.social's summary of under-reported Democrat report on Jordan's weaponization of the judiciary committee against private orgs and companies:

Y'all, it's right there in the dictionary.

SportsBall takes a unique approach to sharing their sports data viz -- timelapse video showing them hand-drawing each week's viz, with narration on top. Worth a watch to spark yourself thinking harder about how you can try something new. 👏🏽 https://www.instagram.com/_sportsball/reels/

Transferring at ORD is all about getting your steps in for the day 🤣

Had a wonderful time at the UNL Carson Center / @novysan.bsky.social data art jam yesterday! Amazing space inspired attendees to build creative data sculptures that reimagined how we communicate with info. Some notes on my blog https://dataculture.northeastern.edu/2025/01/14/UNL-data-art-jam.html

Great job Congress. Truly superb job with your TikTok ban. Just fabulous.

Profs: teaching data storytelling this spring? Consider assigning a chp from my new Community Data book on a bigger & better toolbox for data non-vis. Available to academic libraries online in Oxford Academic. Drop me a line if you want specific recs, but here's an emoji outline 🤣

I come from a family authors -- my grandfather, dad & brother -- but I think I'm the first to recreate my book cover in LEGO bricks 🤣 How'd I do? Rethink your data storytelling with some un-visualization. "Community Data" eBook available now, hardcover pre-order. https://www.communitydatabook.com

Here's your end-of-year Journalism and AI updates, assembled by our team of Storybench reporters:

Today's data-bite: use of Twitter embeds seems to be decreasing in US National news, mirroring overall usage drop by readers and journalists (@mediacloud.bsky.social data). We'll see where this shift goes next year...

Always a joy chat with @abmakulec.bsky.social about creative data visualization, this time centered around my "Community Data" book. Thanks for having me @datavizsociety.bsky.social 🙏🏽 Missed the livestream? Recording here:
