The filmmaking in 28 YEARS LATER………that’s the good stuff right there. Semi-(dis)interested in the thematic/satirical stuff about the ending. More interested in how the movie understands and expresses contemporary life as both tragic and utterly ridiculous.

The generation, as a whole, was never as progressive as the culture around them seemed. Yuppies were the dominant group. The “alt” culture was a reaction against it. And even for that “alt” group, the right just got good at turning The Man into “elitist liberal” culture that scolded you.

Lol. One of Cuomo's biggest donors... ranked Lander first and more or less admits he donated to Cuomo as a bribe because he thought Cuomo would win and wanted to be inside the tent.

Look not to sound dense but like how much can happen on the sandwich guy show

All of our most talented (male) mainstream filmmakers cannot let go of their childhood obsession with Bond, it is quite a thing

This is a Hall of Fame reader comment on a very reactionary op-ed about Zohran Mamdani's victory that was published in my local paper today.

Something I strongly recommend everyone does for a lot of reasons is watch the making-of stuff on the SOCIAL NETWORK disc, which has footage of Fincher going interrogating the script quite literally line by line. It’s really compelling and indicative of why Sorkin’s directed features don’t stand up.

Always loved the people who are like, "But my ancestors came here the legal way!" and by that they mean they arrived via ratship to an island, a man asked them their name, they were like, "Uh, Jeff... Smith?" another guy said "sure?" and then they became permanent residents of the United States.

RIP Lea Massari. I know Anna, in L'avventura, better than I know most people in my real life. How can you look at the expression in Massari's face and not understand exactly why Anna needed to disappear? Her line reading of 'Uffa che noia!' is a daily soundbite in my head. As is 'Perché, perché...'

JD didn’t get the tie memo

This, AMERICANA, HONEY DON’T, LURKER, and SPLITSVILLE coming out the same weekend is really doing a number on a specific type of audience (me)

Still not over the fact that Brad Lander is the serving NYC Comptroller, rather a demanding position, AND a mayoral candidate, also a demanding FT job—& he found time to go to the courts to tell folks their rights & walk them past danger & the only reason we know is because ICE assaulted him.

The House of Mirth is by far the better film; Davies has a sense of the era, in body and ethos; he inhabited the past, or vice versa: www.newyorker.com/goings-on-ab... www.newyorker.com/culture/rich...

One really bad quality of contemporary American politics is voters’ distrust of anyone younger than them, and the strange assumption the older set has that they’re every bit as vibrant and sharp and have as much stamina at 60+ as someone half their age. Let it go, man.

david hogg off the top rope on the other site

Remember that episode of SOUTH PARK right after the Michael Richards thing where Randy says the n word on WHEEL OF FORTUNE and gets ostracized by society as an “n word guy” so he seeks to have legislation passed that if you say the n word you can’t immediately say “guy” after it? Anyway.

That isn’t deportation. It’s human trafficking.

Same energy

blockbuster didn't die because it didn't acquire netflix. it died because it was acquired by vision as a way for viacom to offload its debt. when blockbuster died, it had a billion dollars in debt on the books, almost all of it viacom's.

Vista playing SCREAM 2 - the opening scene of which was shot at the Vista - on 35 at midnight on a holiday weekend………..yeah I’ll stay up late for that

Not gonna participate in NYT’s little ballot thing but these are my ten favorites of the 21st century, more or less in chronological order Gerry Demonlover Punch-Drunk Love Lost in Translation The New World Speed Racer Wild Grass No Home Movie Trenque Lauquen The Room Next Door

Side by side on the NYT home page, we have a Bret Stephens column lauding Trump's "courageous" decision to strike Iran as though it were the product of some serious strategic calculus, and a news article explaining he did it because Israel's bombing campaign was "playing well" on his teevee.

By the time you’ve reached your forties you will have lived to see the newspapers that insisted that the country you grew up in was on the verge of social collapse portray those very same years of your youth as a period of blissful social cohesion.

There is a whole neighborhood in Los Angeles called Tehrangeles, named after Tehran, Iran. We have the largest population of Iranians outside of Iran.

The main reason, to my mind, America doesn’t use the draft is they found it preferable to recruit vulnerable people who would fall in line, as opposed to people with options who hate it. There’s a reason Vietnam was the last. That said, this administration is dumb enough not to understand that.

Watched 28 DAYS LATER at home and SE7EN at the Vista. This is the vibe.

yes i am sure

God my absolute heart is with the people of Iran, who’ve fought so steadfastly for their own liberation, and are getting fucked half a dozen ways by a whole pantheon of geriatric war criminals while being told they should be grateful for it

Deep thoughts happening on LinkedIn

We’ve had the “skip credits” feature on streaming apps for awhile, but when will they integrate something truly useful, like “skip company logos”

There goes the last DJ

It's pretty telling that the second part of the "Mamdani is a danger to Jewish new yorkers" pitch is always "so vote for sexual harasser shitbag Italian Catholic Andrew Cuomo" and not "so vote for Jewish Progressive Brad Lander"
