Lifting weights is just me preparing to reorganize my books.

🚨🚨🚨 major deadline heading into a heatwave: if you want to apply for financial assistance with A/C from New York State, the deadline is THIS MONDAY, JUNE 23. more info here!

I spoke to some experts about related issues for a Teen Vogue column & a point I keep thinking about is that the wages many young people have are so low, it’s impossible to pay bills, buy a car, etc. Throw in “5 years of experience for an entry-level job” and it feels impossible to make headway.

Feels like yet another Charlie Brown football moment, again with big tech playing center. Why are we always rolling up our sleeves to help these people??? AI trained on out-of-copyright anthropology books, what could go wrong? abcnews.go.com/Technology/w...

NEWS: In one of the first major federal prosecutions of an LA protester, the DOJ has moved to dismiss the case. Jose Manuel Mojica was accused of assaulting officers, but came forward to Guardian to recount how he was brutally attacked by agents. “I feel a huge relief. The truth always comes out."

Saw a comment wondering if the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders fighting for better pay would lead to a "trend" of all dancers "assuming" they deserved better pay and it's like...well, let's hope so!

The Los Angeles Dodgers say ICE was "denied entry to the grounds by the organization"

Season two of Netflix’s “America’s Sweethearts” reveals the cheerleaders have been fighting for higher pay — and won.

trans kids deserve so much more than what this wretched world has to offer

These state laws banning gender-affirming care for youth are a product of religious-right and anti-LGBTQ activist organizing, starting in the years after Obergefell. We know this, because we have the receipts. Here's my 2023 investigation. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

If you live in Kentucky and have children — or just care about the well-being of kids — you need to read the latest investigation by John Cheves. Using open records, John uncovered concerning incidents of abuse, neglect and injuries at these facilities across the state — and they're on the rise.

Kids deserve so much better than this.

Today, the Supreme Court upheld state bans on gender-affirming care. Before the ruling came down, @evanurquhart.bsky.social spoke to trans youth and their parents about why they sought this care, and how this decision could jeopardize their safety. www.teenvogue.com/story/skrmet...

In light of SCOTUS's ruling in Skrmetti, @brittneymac15.bsky.social asked doctors what trans youth and their families need to know about navigating this. @teenvogue.com experts advise continuing to talk to affirming healthcare providers if you have them and exploring options for care out-of-state.

Eleven Palestinians were killed or injured on Tuesday morning after Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd waiting for food trucks in central Gaza, civil defence officials said.

a new report suggests if congress slashes medicaid funding, there are 338 hospitals at risk of closure. for every 10 hospitals that could shutter, at least one would be in kentucky. more details and a list of vulnerable facilities across the commonwealth www.kentucky.com/news/health-...

Sorry, I'm OOO today in order to binge watch the new season of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders show on Netflix and feel a little ashamed of myself the entire time I do so!

Shared this on Instagram but he’s just so cute that everyone here needs to see him, too.

SCOOP: Planned Parenthood informed its affiliates Tuesday that they can apply for waivers to stop providing abortions. It's an attempt to keep Medicaid funding if the GOP budget reconciliation bill passes.

“I feel powerless,” the person said. “It’s a lot more scary than the regular marked police, this is really the secret police. They can do anything to you, so I wasn’t willing to go up and confront them.”

There is a push to use AI in newsrooms as a tool to assist reporters with research, fact-checking, and data analysis with the justification that it’s not replacing reporters’ jobs. But this overlooks the fact that those tasks are actually real jobs that are being automated away in the process

This kills me, not just because of inevitable factual errors & how this further erodes trust in facts to begin with, but because many publications (not to mention publishing) don't employee fact-checkers. Without those specific skills, everything is already worse off. And this makes it even worse.

"A reporter from @thecity.nyc had overheard one agent say to another minutes before Lander’s arrest, 'Do you want to arrest the Comptroller?'"

Just edited a (high school!!) student essay on flooding that's such a knockout I didn't realize I was holding my breath until I reached the end. 🥲

more than 8,000 journalists have been laid off since 2022. That's 9% of the industry.

Going to start taking myself on little writing residencies, and by "residencies," I mean "going to my friends' cities to explore and have coffee and little treats and also doing some writing while I happen to be there."

"The incident was the latest in nearly daily mass deaths of Palestinians who were seeking aid in past weeks, including near sites operated by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation."

1/ The assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband on Saturday underscores the dangers that women in public office and their family members face. Efforts to track data on political violence are inconsistent, and data on women specifically is more limited. 🧵

I'm playing an interview recording that includes my cat meowing (loudly) in the background and he keeps looking at me skeptically, like "that was off the record."

I feel so seen, as someone whose order remains plain old hot black coffee even when it is 90 degrees out.

For @motherjones.com, I'm interested in hearing about grassroots projects in local communities that aim to help disabled/aging residents when climate disasters strike. Please be in touch at [email protected] if you have any examples and reposts appreciated.
