If you’re not an academic and you’re struggling to connect headlines like this to real life, here: a project I’m involved in to make ornithology (bird science) more welcoming and inclusive by supporting marginalized ornithologists (like me!) was just axed this round

The Principal Investigators are trying to keep this work going using crowdsourcing to replace the grant that the government canceled. A donor has pledged to match anything raised from now until Friday! If you have resources and want to support this work to make ornithology better, see next post:

“Privately funded services are cheaper” Yeah because they have no obligation to ensure ongoing operations, access even for “expensive” cases, etc. Cheaper because it does less and fails suddenly.

Holy shit y’all @sarahkendzior.bsky.social’s new book is dazzling and crushing and feels like she tapped into my heart.

Having mixed feelings about seeing a major national conference adopt a virtual format for next year when it explicitly banned hybrid or virtual participation in recent years, which covid certainly warranted. But going virtual is also a perfect response to how unsafe it's becoming to travel here.

Gen Wojcik is awesome! She took some time to chat with me re: metabolism and genetics awhile back. Check out her article on the perennial rise of eugenics in Nature here: 🧪

something I really appreciate about Pascal is that he's using his position - which is very secure, he's hugely successful and they're not going to throw away a bunch of money firing him - to be this outspoken it's important that everyone speak out on trans rights but especially big names

"The data that drives [NOAA] forecasts informs the calculations for an untold number of property insurance policies in the country, helping to channel billions of dollars in aid to home and business owners in the aftermath of natural disasters."

I wrote a thing. I am eternally grateful for my editor, who took the original draft and helped me narrow down my key points into a more effective piece with a broader reach. Also, thanks to the editorial & legal teams, who maintained the message while protecting us in this fraught moment.

NEW: The total loss of NOAA’s office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research —a nerve center of global climate science, data collection and modeling — represents a setback for climate preparedness that experts warn the nation may never recover from. By @abrahm.bsky.social

I wrote about how we must stand and fight against the threat of eugenics. Fueled by white nationalism and scientific racism, these beliefs are factually wrong and ethically abhorrent. This fight includes supporting efforts to diversify our workforce & science. To stop now would be a deep betrayal.

me: why do chicken coups only have two doors? interviewer: i meant questions about the job… me: because if they had four doors they’d be chicken sedans. interviewer: you’re hired.

A good politician would make policies that reduce harm. The Trump administration wants to change what legally counts as harm so they can, through creative accounting, say that less harm is happening. This is Orwellian pseudoscientific bullshit and we should oppose it.

It is useful to keep talking about it because those same career scientists simply aren't wired to speak up for themselves. They go out of their way to never say or do anything that advocates for themselves, personally. It's on us to be raising these alarms to the distracted masses out there.

My new humorous birding gift book The Birding Dictionary is out May 6, and we've got a nice pinback button for folks in the US who preorder: www.hachettebookgroup.com/landing-page...

I planted more plants! Specifically my winter sowing guys who did particularly well. White wood aster Partridge peas Swamp milkweed Foxglove beardtongue Blue vervain New England aster Goldentop Anise hyssop More space still to plant. Many, many more seedlings. 🌱 #nativeplants

I think this nails why I find genAI so acutely insulting as an educator. My job as a science educator is to teach how to ask and then go about answering questions, because just memorizing facts doesn't make you a good researcher

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies. Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

TLDR: the administration wants to remove habitat loss from the definition of "harm" for endangered species, which will effectively gut the ESA. I just commented. If you're in any way interested in ecology, nature, and the protection of endangered species, you should, too. Free daily action!

This past week, IRBS staff attended the annual Mississippi River Research Consortium meeting, a group of public agencies, private organizations & universities that conduct research on the Mississippi River and its watershed. IRBS staff and graduate students contributed to 7 talks and 5 posters.

I saw advice to buy extra cans of food when you’re at the grocery store to donate to the food bank. I want to politely nudge you to give the money directly to food banks (or to mutual aid groups if you know of any). We can usually stretch a dollar farther than a dollar’s worth of canned goods

For nearly 15 years the US Dept of Interior's Climate Adaptation* Science Centers have supported hundreds of scientists studying how ecosystems respond to climate change & pollution, invasive species, sustainable wildlife & wild lands management, and more. Now the admin wants to cancel them all.

(continued:) "God's economy, on the other hand, does not kill, discard or crush. It is lowly, faithful to the earth. Your way, Jesus, is the way of the Beatitudes. It does not crush, but cultivates, repairs and protects."

the thing I hate most about that rfk quote is that autistic lives have value and worth and beauty and dignity whether they are able to do the things other people do or not. no one is defined by ability or lack thereof and to frame divergence as lack is monster stuff, utterly godless

i really need cis folks to get this through your heads. no, they don't want me in the women's bathroom. or the men's bathroom. they don't want gender-neutral bathrooms or special "trans only" bathrooms (like some will claim). they want me to simply not exist.

a thread of anonymous snippets from said emails

So many “goodbye, I’ve left my position” emails right now. It’s all so sad.

Your reward for making it to Friday is Pope Francis going Kendrick Lamar on Trump.

Many of my wonderful colleagues are making the hard choice to leave federal service. I fully support them in making that choice, and I am also crying reading their farewell emails.

SOOTHING BIRD FACT 🐦 The only birds with truly green feathers are the turacos, which produce a unique coppery pigment called turacoverdin. All other "green" birds create the color through light's interaction with their feathers' molecular structure. 📷 René Cortin, via Wikimedia Commons
