My take: Bullies will always protect bullies.

Yes

Something good: This past week I read at TCU in Fort Worth as part of their Live Oak Reading series. I also spoke to a class of fiction students. I’m telling you both were such a treat! More than ever I’m convinced that community will save us.

From “One of Us”—seems like a good anthem right now “Yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us? Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make His way home?” — lyrics by Alanis Morissette and Glenn Ballard

Demand your GOP congressman cut their budget and lay off some staff. Congress spends 6.4billion/year on their own operations.

Gotta say, it’s fun to discover new national and local places to shop and to remember old ones I used to frequent. Ace Hardware, Costco, Best Buy, H-E-B, People’s Pharmacy and a ton of other local businesses, here I come!

A huge thanks to ⁦‪Lamya H‬⁩ for generosity of time and spirit! Episode 272 is now up! Buy the stellar Hijab Butch Blues: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/695816... Listen: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/e...

Meanwhile up early

Villifying civil servants and replacing them with loyalists, breaking up with Europe, and questioning if POTUS should listen to judges. Golly, what could go wrong?

Seriously, creative folks: Don't be afraid to let people know your stuff is out there for them, or worry that "now is not the time for that." People are stressed and freaked out and looking for the things that will give them a moment of rest and joy. It is EXACTLY the time for what we do. Tell them.

Finally done!! Still need to soak and frame it, but excited to start the next one 💖

If anyone finds themselves needing a break from news, here’s an essay of mine that was recently published as part of the series, How We Spend Our Days. I wrote it in the “good ole days” before the inauguration. open.substack.com/pub/howwespe...

Here we go. I’m starting another novel. I finished my last one two weeks ago and it’s now sitting with a few prospective agents—fingers, toes and everything else crossed. In the meantime I’m staring once again across the vast ocean of writing a first draft and hoping I reach the other side.

Happy anniversary to my rainbow connection — a decade together and four years married!

If you are feeling overwhelmed, it makes perfect sense. I want to once again offer that it's so much better to immerse yourself in only one or two things. Follow the news about just those focus areas. Importantly find concrete small actions to take in those specific areas. Key is consistency.

Meanwhile our geranium, inside for the winter, is blooming

If you're wondering whether you should promote your book or your latest publication now with all the chaos, the answer is yes. We need your words. We need to flood the channels with art and literature. So go for it, friends.

Next time someone asks, “What kind of asshole creates problems where there aren’t any and then calls it a win when the whole thing backfires and he backtracks?” you know exactly what to tell them.

Dear US Allies, Please slap a tariff on that car brand that begins with “tes” and ban that social platform called ex. Also, how are you doing? (Yep, some of us still care.) Sincerely, Many Americans P.S. Uncle Sam says hello and hurry.

At least 17 of these are mine.

A timeless favorite .. thanks for reminding me about this novel

I have read my book five times this month, and I am tired of it. There's one more left. The last time I had a book published, the husband and I sat down with two copies of the proofs and took turns reading every word aloud. Highly recommended—we caught some stuff.

Between the bots and bros who think this is a dating site, I am becoming a blocking black belt on here.

Sharing my ideas for skipping the inauguration: -Avoid news -Hug wife a lot -Volunteer, honor MLK -Compose gratitude list -Write 1000 words -Take long walk -Meet w/ friends, make 2025 vision boards -Meditate -Read a book -Do neglected house chore -Listen to Dolly Parton boxset -Cook & eat good meal

No way I can let the birthday of #GracePaley go by without some celebration— & reading.
