If you’re a 14 year old boy who watches *one* NHL highlight video, your YouTube ads and recos are almost automatically the Rogan-Peterson-Tate souphole. They’re not finger wagged into it. It’s the default male adolescent ecosystem. The job (of fathers, brothers and friends) is to pull them out.

This is true about NOAA in particular... But also about almost every agency... I'm a little tired of everyone assuming that because they're ignorant about some particular thing that it's not important...

It's equal parts nauseating and funny to see these guys talking about "strength" and "courage" and "standing up" while engaging in the kind of pathetic, servile, "yes-my-baron" ritual groveling rarely seen by men not wearing literal gimp suits.

Watching that I'd say the mineral deal is this: US will allow Rus to topple Ukr Govt, 'negotiate' an end to the war & Russian puppets in Ukr 'honor' deal-evidence of them being the "legitimate continuation" of Ukr gov, thus ensure US oligarchs profit from the war end w/Ukr capitulation, ASAP.

I suspect this is a HUGELY underestimated factor in radicalization. If you look at, say, QAnon boards, it’s not really folks looking for scapegoats for their dire material circumstances. It’s middle-class people with boring lives who want to imagine they’re in The Parallax View.

At this point, there are only two options: A) Elon is so dishonest that he is willing to peddle obvious lies to score PR points B) Elon really is this stupid

The great Yale historian, Timothy Snyder, expert on fascism and on Ukraine and Russia

Even with a fairly good memory of just how stupid 2016-2020 was, I had forgotten just how viscerally stupid it is to have this man as president.

Democrats: introduce articles of impeachment tomorrow. Ignore the pollsters and strategists who will tell you not to for the same braindead reasons they always tell you not to stick your necks out. Just do what’s right, it couldn’t be easier to explain.

It took Trump 3 hours to delete the Spanish version of the White House website and the White House’s Spanish Twitter account. Trump won 42% of the Hispanic vote.

Jay Bhattacharya fancies himself a modern day Galileo (see his remarks on the establishment as a church out to persecute him). In reality he is a man who got too much wrong about COVID and has no ability to admit it. This arrogance has radicalized him and pushed him into the arms of the far right.

The greatest lie the devil ever told is that norms are the same thing as morals. Norms are contracts, and contracts can be broken by either party. If one party breaks a norm and the other still keeps it, all they are doing is abetting their own abuse under the auspices of certitude.

Response to coups by elected leaders: - South Korea: blocked by mass mobilization of citizens - Brazil: coup leader indicted, barred from politics - United States: coup leader re-elected with majorities in the legislature and a compliant Supreme Court

that Korea does this, immediately, in the face of actual soldiers trying to impose martial law - when members of our own congress voted for a coup hours after the J6 mob stormed congress, and the coup instigator won the next election - is about as scathing an indictment of America as I’ve ever seen

People don't get that Trump's DOJ can harass critics without indicting them. Launching a mere investigation would drain them of resources. One model is how House GOP investigations have already been used against MAGA enemies. My exchange with Michael Sozen on that: newrepublic.com/article/1889...

Trump has now appointed the fathers-in-law of both of his daughters to hugely influential government jobs they aren’t qualified for, but something something “Hunter Biden.”

Obama's '08 campaign won the biggest margin of victory in the last 30+ years. Within hours of his inauguration, Republicans went to dinner and agreed to oppose him on every single item. Two years later, they won 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats.

None of this election loss was about tactics. It's about an info ecosystem that is rotten with pure disinformation. How do you even fight this when blatant lies seep so deeply into the nations consciousness? archive.ph/BV9mK

Just insane that the left treated the tech industry with increasing hostility just because they undermined organized labor, flouted the regulatory state, and bragged that they were going to get rid of everybody's jobs for a decade straight.

This is getting overlooked, but the whole premise of Trump's threat of tariffs is based on a lie. He's claiming Mexico must be bullied into stopping migrants. But Mexico is *already* doing this. That's a big reason crossings have dropped. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/1888...

It is obvious though. Truth/reality isn't some needle that pierces the information bubble... People can only derive their opinions by drawing conclusions based on the information they have. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.

“I just simply can’t understand why so many people voted for that guy!” It’s actually not that hard to understand.

I hope federally funded scientists are preparing for large scale, bad faith attacks by Musk and his troll army. It’s pretty clear the DOGE operation is going to take snippets of grant proposals and papers, present them out of context, and direct weaponized harassment of individual people.

I have a sports metaphor story for this! I have a younger brother who was a very competitive baseball player as a kid. Was on all the local travel & developmental squads. One of his coaches had a very interesting and counterintuitive (to me) philosophy of the game, as it was played at that level.

One thing I find interesting about the echo chamber complaint is that an echo chamber just won a presidential election. Put aside the convo of whether it’s “good” or “bad” for a moment. The far right has devoted enormous resources + time to building echo chambers & loathes spaces they don’t control

The pattern for this is the same as it was for Civil War revisionism: No, these people were traitors who attacked their country and they should never be celebrated. We're still fighting that fight, though, unfortunately.

I really don't care about video games or speed running them. But somehow a few years ago I found @summoningsalt.bsky.social on YouTube and I just love the way he tells stories, and I find myself watching speed run record histories of Super Mario, Mario kart, half life 2, etc...

so is anybody even going to bother to go through the motions of calling for Trump to divest from his businesses this time around, or did we just give up on that one too?
