Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase β€œshake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

#ShowMeYourKnits WIP edition! There is only one WIP at the moment and it is the Peace by Piece blanket (www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...) for my best friend. I have about a third of the squares done and I've started joining them together! 🧢

The question that occupies my mind most at the moment is: WHEN will we get the UK cover reveal for Katabasis by R F Kuang?

Palestinian booksellers decry detention by Israeli police over β€˜public disorder’

I haven't read any of the @womensprize.bsky.social for Non-Fiction longlistees and that makes me so excited! I can't wait to dive in to such an array of subjects. Join me on @thestorygraph.com as we read our way through the 2025 books app.thestorygraph.com/reading_chal...

Aware that I'm about to sound 350 years old: Gay people should learn our fkn history. Without trans women, black trans sex workers, and drag queens, THERE'S NO STONEWALL RIOT and LGBT+ rights. We owe our rights to our solidarity. Our strength is in not letting one "letter" get picked off. Wake up.

I am just a girl standing in front of the landlords of Edinburgh begging them not to ruin a perfectly good property with grey carpets

I'm looking forward to what February brings generally, but I'm *particularly* looking forward to the Non-Fiction @womensprize.bsky.social longlist πŸ€“

Even if people aren't picking up Austen (which I don't believe to be the case) these covers are going to do nothing except create sheer confusion. These covers don't fit a world in which a woman's main pastime is 'turning about the room'

Dipped my toe into #tarot in 2024 and now I'm looking forward to exploring it more in 2025 ✨️ #tarotsky

People probably know this, but if you have a UK library card, you can use the Libby app to borrow ebooks and audio books for free, without physically going to the library. πŸ“šπŸŽ§

2 days before the end of the month and my currently reading pile is getting slightly out of control 🫠 Not pictured (e-reader reads): Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe, Not For the Faint of Heart by Lex Croucher, and Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey πŸ“šπŸ’™

- Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon - The Shades of Magic series by V E Schwab - The Burning Kingdoms series by Tasha Suri πŸͺπŸ“š

I started bookselling in 1996: end of the Net Book Agreement & Amazon UK. Everyone predicted bricks & mortar bookstores wd die. Ebooks, Wstones monopoly (they don't pay living wage btw). Yet we persist: indie bookstores are community centres. Books are the bricks. Buy em from us. Throw em at Nazis.

The shop is closed thanks to #Eowyn so I'm at home writing up recommendations and getting stuck into exciting 2025 reads. #Booksky #TheFavourites #BuryOurBonesInTheMidnightSoil πŸ’™πŸ“š

Amazon UK has said that it will cease selling Bloomsbury’s print and e-books from midnight on 23rd January, saying negotiations between the giant retailer and the publisher had broken down πŸ‘‡ #BookSky www.thebookseller.com/news/amazon-...

What has 10 legs and is coming soon? Give up? It's the cast of Series 19! #Taskmaster returns with Fatiha El-Ghorri, Jason Mantzoukas, Mathew Baynton, Rosie Ramsey and Stevie Martin.

It's my weekend! Here are my reading plans πŸ’™πŸ“š A Bookshop of One's Own by Jane Cholmeley, so good I've pre-ordered the paperback to highlight and annotate And!! #BuryOurBonesInTheMidnightSoil by V E Schwab, sent to the bookshop by @torbooksuk.bsky.social. Words cannot express how excited I am 😭

Get thee to a nunnery ✝️

READERS! Streetreads, a community led library for the unhoused & homeless - which operated from the bookshop basement in earlier days - is a vital, nourishing, creative space and service that deserves your support! Pls read/share & donate if you can: www.justgiving.com/campaign/str...

Accidentally joined in with #JanuaryInJapan thanks to my library reservation for The Bookshop Woman by Nanako Hanada coming in πŸ’™πŸ“š I was excited for this one but I was quite disappointed by the end, and not just because of the writing. www.instagram.com/p/DE4pXEOIod...

Twas the morning of book club and ZoΓ« was yet again attempting to read half a book in a day

I decided that my first knitting project of 2025 would be my biggest and most expensive yet: a Peace by Piece blanket (www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...) made up of 144 colourwork squares 🧢 It took me a while to get used to holding the yarns at the same time, but now I'm hooked and loving it!

Decidedly lukewarm take but: posting negative reviews is fine, actually. If it's evidenced and not a personal attack on the author, it's not mean to share a non-glowing opinion. We're allowed to have opinions on the art we consume.

PSA2 if you've had good service from someone in retail let their manager or the company customer service people know, it's so good for their next review

The calm before the storm that will be my last shift before Christmas πŸŽ…πŸ»πŸŽ„

Merry Yule! Happy solstice! My darlings, we did it: here is now the ebb of darkness. Here is now the coming of the light.

My friends, 2025 is going to be rocky. But one thing I know for sure is that some incredible people put a huge amount of care, craft, love and rage into writing books that will soon be published that are going to help us make sense of this broken and beautiful world. πŸ“šπŸ§΅

I made the mistake of putting all of my physical TBR in one place 🫠 πŸ’™πŸ“š www.instagram.com/p/DDt_qZZIA6...

i love you libraries i love you museums i love you botanical gardens i love you public parks i love you art galleries

2025 is not only going to bring us new books by R F Kuang, V E Schwab, and Samantha Shannon, but now Tasha Suri too?? What did we do to deserve this 🀩

I usually don't follow the Booker very closely but I am fascinated to see what these folks select

Reading update: I think this book is too silly for me. I can handle a lot of silliness but a horse called Whitneigh Houston turns out to be a step too far
