Watching a man get disappeared for political dissent in the middle of the United States, as the opposition party agrees to give the tyrant a blank check to do whatever he wants

A quiet discourse on shoes with Lou Reed and Fast Fox on the back of a half buried ‘69 Charger in Harkey Valley, Arkansas. “Sure, all men are beasts. Hey look, I’ll sit here quietly and I’ll stare at my feet.” Lou Reed “Ok.” Fast Fox

Merton & Batman discuss war on a '78 Camaro atop Mt. Magazine, Logan Cnty, Arkansas. "For the Church is Christ Himself, present in the world. He has redeemed, present in mystery, in poverty, in ways that are a scandal to human wisdom and to the ruthless leaders of men." Merton "I'm Batman." Batman

HIGHLY recommend. Incredible book. A great tool for crystallizing perspectives, refining logic, and gathering ideas. It is challenging & invigorating. It hurts a bit, too. The mansplaining chapter is a fun & cutting chapter. The last chapter is a perfect crescendo of reason and action.

I was just reminded that on this date in 1997, Americana by Starflyer 59 was released. I bought it not too long after and specifically remember listening to it in the parking lot before class at Art Center College of Design. I spilled my coffee getting out of the car.

I know this is extremely vulgar idealism, but I do think we should try to aggressively reassert the norm that lying is bad. Not in a "Four Pinnochios" fact-checking kind of way, but in a way that frames this kind of lying as moral degeneracy that is fundamentally corrosive to the human spirit.

I absolutely love to read and I think I’ve finally found a better way to keep my growing to-read list organized. Who else is using StoryGraph? @thestorygraph.com is a non-Bezos (so far as I know) enriching, trimmed-down but still robust alternative to Goodreads.

DOGE continues to cut off access to quality of life resources for rural Arkansans. I would like to know what relevant county commissioners, mayors, and other elected officials are going to do to ensure citizens have the resources these offices have been providing. www.kark.com/news/state-n...

always ALWAYS read @michaelharriot.bsky.social

“I have danced around this topic for years, hoping to stumble on the existence of a pithy hashtag and prolific community for such discussions. Honestly, I'd rather write about rolly polys and coyotes and dead grandmothers who live inside flower petals.” www.patreon.com/posts/123389...

I'm teaching a 4-week class on Mary Ruefle's "Madness, Rack, and Honey" in April. I would LOVE to spend the first month of spring discussing one of my favorite books with you. 💛

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F. 18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it. We made this website to tell our story: 18f.org

Just listened to a wonderful episode of How to Survive the End of the World with guest author Dr. @eveewing.bsky.social. Immediately added their new book to my reading list on Storygraph. app.thestorygraph.com/books/fa3c68...

Apropos of absolutely everything, Elon and Trump’s relationship will fully sour and it will be messy AF.

Heck of a morning. I thank the universe for skateboarding today.

If you had to choose RIGHT NOW, what would you say is your roll in fighting a fascist, authoritarian, oligarchy? If someone held a gun to your head and said “Choose your roll now,” and it had to be something you could accomplish, no matter how abstract, adjacent, or small, what would you chose?

I have fallen back in love with pencils. They’re just great.

How unlike those who say “Are his brights on? I can’t tell. They’re so bright! They hurt but are they even too bright? I want to flash my brights at this inconsiderate driver to say his lights are too bright but what if I’m wrong?…

This excellent comic is by @chazhutton.bsky.social. I won’t say that this was his intention but this cartoon has everything to do with movement work in the of time of authoritarianism. We make the road by walking.

Part 2 of @ryan-holiday.bsky.social book Right Thing, Right now is absolutely invigorating and what I need now. I won’t try to speak to everyone but I want to speak directly to other white men and say read this book, fellas.

This week I started the dismantling of my back porch. I tell you all this because the reasons are anti-fascist, anti-bird flu, deeply Stoic, and pro-community. Follow the journey with me. I will try to fill you in on progress. This is also to say teenage Bryan would have thought I was pretty rad.

I missed getting this up yesterday on the tenth anniversary of Harris Wittels passing. Safe travels in the great beyond, sir. I made this when he passed and read it every so often for a laugh and cry. #squarecircletriangle #comedybangbang

My mother sent this to me. How cool is that (both the source and the content)? sojo.net/articles/opi...

White men, what are you doing to build and rebuild your ground-level communities as things change?

Today I caught up on packing some go-bag essentials and thought a lot about Lauren Olamina, the Stoic practice of premeditatio malorum, and friends whose lives are being made so very much harder right now.

A random series of #communitypreparedness questions (2): Who in your community is really good with fixing broken cars and/or equipment? Who in your community has access to large swaths of parts that can be repurposed?

“…tender endurance.” I’m sitting with this phrase today, written by @ryan-holiday.bsky.social in regards to Abraham Lincoln in The Obstacle is the Way.

A random series of #communitypreparedness questions: Who in your community already knows how to---and has lots of experience in--- diffusing unnecessary inter-personal and community conflict? Make sure they feel supported, loved, respected. Their skills are essential. <3
