My college students are aware that, unlike me at their age, they have a whole other (upaid) job: curating their online presence. They know that to employers and other gatekeepers, they aren't real if they aren't also virtual.

Took me a while to learn to pronounce "estadounidense" when I lived in Nicaragua, but it's an extremely useful word. In my own writing, I tend to use locutions like "people living in the U.S." or when I really mean "citizens", "U.S. citizens." And always "the United States", not "America."
