Just now from the state prison agency: "Those participating in the illegal job action will face administrative penalties along with Department discipline for violating the State’s Taylor Law and a judge’s temporary restraining order."

Spoke to someone incarcerated at Woodbourne last night who told me that “So far, the National Guard are nicer than the correction officers, and don’t really seem to know why they’re there.”

The Bureau of Prisons is moving forward with plans to move transgender inmates out of prisons that align with their gender identity and into facilities that align with their assigned sex at birth.

It's pretty cool that Eater put together resources for restaurants about how to handle ICE raids

"FIRE is effectively endorsing professors who silence their critics and victims, and penalizing colleges that hold those professors accountable." Remember that Trump's NIH Director pick Jay Bhattacharya wants these rankings weighed in funding decisions (1/2)

This is a great backgrounder on the wildcat strike roiling New York prisons right now: nysfocus.com/2025/02/20/b...

"It happened because correction officers have been held accountable for their actions, and they feel threatened because they can be prosecuted for killing an incarcerated individual." "They want to go back to the good old days of just beating and killing guys, and not being on camera."

As correction officers continue their strike and Gov. Hochul brings in the National Guard, I spoke to incarcerated New Yorkers to get their take on what's happening in NY prisons for @hellgatenyc.com hellgatenyc.com/prison-guard...

New: Multiple state correction officers were criminally charged for their alleged roles in the murder of Robert Brooks inside an upstate New York prison in December. Brooks, 43, was handcuffed behind his back as guards kicked and punched him while they held him down. www.thecity.nyc/2025/02/20/n...

The guards are demanding the repeal of the four-year-old HALT Solitary Confinement Act. Lost in much of the conversation: The prison system has been flouting some of the law's central provisions. nysfocus.com/halt-impleme...

"It’s clear that private equity investors want to keep methadone locked in methadone clinics to make money instead of save lives," Sen. Markey told @stahlidarity.bsky.social. Don't miss this story: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

I didn't realize that *six* attorneys at DOJ have now resigned after being told to drop the charges against Adams. Bove responded to their principled stand against brazen corruption by threatening to investigate them for ethics violations. He also hinted at criminal charges.

ngl I’m feeling very moved by the story of two women on a subway stepping up to deliver a third woman’s baby. a reminder that most people are decent and brave and willing to help. hoping for the best for the new mom. www.nydailynews.com/2025/02/12/b...

“I didn’t know that there was a group of people that was willing to go out in public and say, ‘We’re drug users, and we want our rights back.” --->In my first piece for @motherjones.com, I profiled the growing movement of drug users seeking to #liberatemethadone www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

"scientists — who are forbidden by the terms of the stop-work order to speak with the news media — described agonizing choices: violate the stop-work orders and continue to care for trial volunteers, or leave them alone to face potential side effects and harm" www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/h... Evil.

Robert Brooks’s killing by prison guards sparked national outcry because it was caught on video. But a decade-long, billion-dollar initiative has brought full security and body cameras coverage to only a fraction of New York’s 42 prisons, a New York Focus investigation finds.

Incarcerated people have asked for more cameras in NY prisons for years, and the state has spent millions. Yet it took the brutal killing of Robert Brooks for them to speed up the process of equipping COs with cameras. Looked into it with @chrisgelardi.bsky.social nysfocus.com/2025/02/03/r...

It's February which means it's #BlackHistoryMonth & I've said before I love #BHM. This month, I'm going to share a resource with a focus on Black history that I had a hand in making every day. Starting today with my Slavery & Resistance in NYC Walking Tour: Slavery and Resistance in NYC Walking Tour

"A New York doctor was indicted by a Louisiana grand jury on Friday for allegedly prescribing an abortion pill online in the Deep South state, which has one of the strictest near-total abortion bans in the country." apnews.com/article/abor...

check out that chyron. this is where we're at.

I genuinely hope that one silver lining of Trump 2.0 is that more ppl, esp in the press, really appreciate, in their bones, that “tough on crime” types are NOT interested in safety. They are interested in SOCIAL CONTROL. Safety can COME from that, sometimes. But it’s a collateral benefit.

Delightfully odd tidbit in this super helpful guide from @thecity.bsky.social: NYers keep trying to recycle bowling balls: “We don’t know where they are all coming from. We see a ridiculous amount…and they get stuck in weird places,” Napolitano said. www.thecity.nyc/2025/01/28/h...

Did you know jails and/or prisons in at least 43 states force people to pay hefty daily fees for their own confinement? I wrote on how this scheme upends lives, promotes recidivism, and harms public safety, on the occasion of one jail erasing $65M+ in pay-to-stay debt: boltsmag.org/jail-debt-an...

Tried to take a joyous reunion selfie with my dog when I got home today and it wound up resembling a hostage situation

It was parked outside a hospital.

For the past year, @propublica.org has been reporting on the toll when a city "sweeps" an encampment. We handed out cards so folks could write in their own words what it meant to have their belongings trashed. We're publishing dozens of those stories here: projects.propublica.org/impact-of-ho...
