New(ish) to sewing - Just spent an entire weekend afternoon, literal HOURS, troubleshooting my machine (jammed thread under fabric). Tried everything: new needle, different fabric/thread, other stitch settings etc... even disassembled machine bits! Turns out I just threaded the top thread wrong.🤦🏻‍♀️

Pet Peeve: When people talk about #WomenInSTEM or #WomenInScience WITHOUT actually mentioning what they did that was noteworthy or just focus on "inspiration". 🫤 Imagine doing the same to any male scientist! Try countering this bias/Matilda Effect with the Finkbeiner Test. In other words... [🧵]

Feel like every cute image of a springtail also needs to be accompanied by a video/GIF of them absolutely TUMBLING through the air. There's no style or grace to their jump... Just *Wheeeeeee~!* 🤣 youtu.be/H94mzOt6nKc?...

It would be nice if people could stop acting like DEI is an only a moral good. DEI strengthens organizations. People from diverse backgrounds bring new ways of solving problems and serving people. DEI isn’t a gift to diverse people. It’s a gift to the orgs that hire us.

Umm...YES?! The answer to this question, is always a resounding yes. 😆 (but yeah #Bugsky is a thing of absolute beauty and a great place to get your much-needed bug fix❤️ )

This is the year of the snake, but every year can be the year of caterpillar! 🐛 caterpillar can do anything! Therefore here’s the 12 Chinese zodiac in caterpillar version! Which is the your caterpillar zodiac?

Happy Year of the Snake everyone! 🐍🧧 新年快樂, 萬事如意!祝大家今年「蛇」麼都好, 「蛇」麼都順! (+ Enjoy this stunning photo taken by Andreas Kay of a Snake-mimic caterpillar, Hemeroplanes triptolemus. flic.kr/p/FKqQA4 - cus bugs are just awesome like that 😎) #LunarNewYear #YearoftheSnake #Bugsky

Mood. 🫠 Staring at PhD opportunities like: "pretty please don't vanish or blow up before I get around to dealing with you since I actually need funding/support for this to all work out- kthx! 😬"

Really, really needed to hear this. 🥲 I'll be honest, last few days have been rough as an American. Lot of people/situations I'm worried about back home. Will mainly be ❤️&📌-ing activism for now vs reskeeting. Not cus it doesn't deserve attention, more like constant dread isn't useful for me.

Sadly, it's where my thoughts have been going as well (as hyperbolic as it might seem on the surface)... 😟Would like to be persuaded otherwise too. Guess knowing about CR history gives us insight into what's going on and helps us plan ahead? But yeah, things aren't looking great now, ngl...

Hahaha 😂- I guess if you really think about it, most animals are sorta just fancy bio tubes?🤯 The sheer skill of artists to turn shapes into detailed sketches always amazes me though - seems almost magical! (Side note: As someone who always checks image Alt Text, thanks for the bonus laugh! 😆)

Somewhat related to the planetary science below - Happy Winter Solstice/冬至 (Dongzhi Festival) everyone! Hope you are all having a great time with friends and family this holiday season! 🥰 (Also, Peanut tangyuan/湯圓 >>> Sesame ones. Just sayin' 😜)

The existence of trans and queer people is not inappropriate for any age to know about

Look, normally I'm more #TeamBugs but every time #GarWeek roll around, I start getting pulled into #TeamFish... That is some A+ pun (& Scicomm) work there! 😂

ANOTHER DRAGON BALL ENTOMOLOGY WIN HYAAAAAAAAH!!!

Awww! Look at all these cuties! 🥰

And that's a wrap on #Hymathon2024! 🐝🐜 First time attending, learned a ton and had a wonderful time - hope to see y'all next year! ❤️ (Thanks to all the amazing organizers @hymenopterists.org.web.brid.gy for running such a wonderful event!)

As someone who very vividly remembers getting stung by a mound of fire ants as a kid... ooof! Not good. 😬 One of the world's worst invasive alien species has made it's way to Cyprus and starting to spread... luckily we have researchers working on monitoring & public awareness! 💪 #Hymathon2024

Starting off session 4 of #Hymathon2024 with a keynote by Tamara Spasojevic (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien) - looking at the evolution dynamics of Darwin wasps and using different approaches to establish more consistent age estimates & phylogenies!

Final session of #Hymathon2024 starting up soon! 🐝🐜 Already voted for the art competition but still deciding between all the wonderful options for the Hymenotera Showdown - so many good points (& fantastic one liners)! 😂

Gotta dash, life/work stuff! 🙃 Will pop back in later for more #Hymathon2024 goodness! In the mean time, check out hashtag or Jess Awad @parasitoidrex.bsky.social to follow along! Also enjoy some wonderful Hymanotera photos/art here! www.hymenopterists.org/hymathon-art...

Love seeing historical documents & NatSci illustrations being used in current ento. research! 🥰 Neat findings about old records of species which are now extinct in Regensburg (fmr. Ratisbon), Germany! (Also "Bank robber or Hymenopterist?" needs to be a card game or something! 😂) #Hymathon2024

TIL about Mesocentrus sasquatch, so named because of "it has very large feet, hence 'big foot'!" Apparently it's also really cute! Anyone got a photo? Google images isn't helping out much. #Hymathon2024

Great start to the morning, looking at a deceptively simple question: How old are bees really?* (*and where did the come from, where did the go?) Lot of really neat approaches from morphological (i.e. body form) to fossil evidence used sorting out these insects through time!

Nothing like starting off today morning with some bees & wasps! 🐝 (Context: #Hymathon2024 is happening now! 24 hour virtual marathon of all thing Hymenoptera, let's goooo!)
