Been some time since I posted much of anything. How about this no-nonsense jousting armor from c. 1560? Scant decoration beyond the roped edges. Built for a man with less pretense or more modest means (for a nobleman)? Who can know? #armsandarmor #armor #16thcentury #history

Message from the front! During WWII, army dog Dolly served as a messenger dog on the border between Finland & Sweden. Dolly's handler regularly sent letters home to her owners, sharing updates about her well-being and performance. The two below are written on birch bark, 1944! #Skystorians

A photo from a recent SCA event. I've not been active on my history account lately. The reasons? Painfully pretentious and droll. I'm still here being the 16th century history nerd, even if I'm a bit flummoxed on how to share it. #mysca #sca #reenactment #livinghistory #16thcenturyfashion

Fascinating!

A 🧵on religious monsters in HUMANS: A MONSTROUS HISTORY, (Feb. 4, @ucpress.bsky.social) In the 16th-C Protestant Reformation, religious thinkers weaponized monstrous births. They spun them as metaphors sent from God to show church corruption under the pope and his priests. 💙📚 🗃 #earlymodern 1/10

I have created a starter pack for scholars of the long sixteenth century. Please share, contact me with suggestions for other people to include, and of course if you would like to be included yourself. #skystorians #SixteenthCentury #StarterPack #history #EarlyModern go.bsky.app/U4CEeWN

Cleared off the top of this bookshelf to make room for the Christmas nativity. #darkacademia #maximalism #antiques

I feel so much better that I got my 2024 new purchases out of stacks and onto shelves now! Just... need to go back and organize and add titles to the database, but that's future Will's problem.

A brief introductory thread 🧵 👋 I'm Will, a #history geek from the US fascinated by the Renaissance & #earlymodern era, particularly the Low Countries (think Benelux) of c. 1549-1619. I use Rebels or Beggars to share interesting snippets of that history. 1/5

Oldest-surviving anatomical theatre, located in Padua and built in 1594. Over the entrance is the Latin inscription: “hic est locus ubi mors gaudet succurrere vitam.” Roughly: “this is the place where death delights to help life (or the living).” Photo: Rolando Paolo Guerzoni. #histmed #skystorians

Coming 23 January, pre-orders are now live! I'll post some sneaky previews once I've got them, but many details are already available on the OUP page (if not yet our snazzy cover, which I must therefore gratuitously re-share here). So excited about this project! 😊 global.oup.com/academic/pro...

On the shelf, it would look like an ordinary book, but when opened you’d find drawers to hide poison. The inside cover has a woodcut from Vesalius’ De Fabrica. The glass bottle says STATUT UM EST HOMINIBUS SEMEI MOR - it is well established that all people die once. It was made in Germany in 1682

With the new series of #Wolfhall continuing on BBC this evening this seems like a good time to share a #Tudor #stainedglass heraldic panel from Fawsley Hall now in #BurrellCollection with #CatherineofAragon’s coat of arms #16thC

Be careful out there.

New podcast to me, and particularly of interest to see how Northeastern Europe adapted to the "pike and shot" developments to the west. Will be giving this a listen.

I don't think I've seen one of these, so: my attempt at an early modern lit starter pack! (Plus some C18 people because I've decided to go on the offence and y'all are part of long C17 now.) Apologies for any omissions / unwanted inclusions -- if you want on or off let me know! go.bsky.app/Qd456bF

The premodern world held possibilities and imagined futures: the physical and metaphysical systems that were actively built and contested then continue to inform the world in the present. Read our statement on the value of Renaissance & Premodern Studies: www.rensoc.org.uk/statement-on...

I've begun a starter pack of scholars of the early modern Low Countries. Let me know if you want me to add you. #earlymodern 🗃️ go.bsky.app/VsHZ9xJ

Given the X-odus (see what we did there? A true fire bird): which other #earlymodern centres have arrived here already? We've got a starter pack for easy following, but keen to hear about more: go.bsky.app/LLzFj3b #skystorians
