Tomorrow MDFF Selects is hosting Lázaro at Night with Nicolás Pereda in attendance at TIFF. I'll be moderating the Q&A following the screening.

Shelly Winters and Mounties in technicolor directed by Raoul Walsh for Canadian Film Day.

I was bluffing. Didn’t think it would actually get 20k. I don’t want to reveal my account and get roasted. Stop watching my movie.

If you’re debating what Val Kilmer movie to watch I’d like to remind you that Vilmos Zsigmond was the cinematographer on Real Genius.

This is a beautiful film and the epitome of what we program at MDFF Selects. It’s played Locarno, Viennale, NYFF, and BFI but somehow missed Toronto. This is actually the Canadian premiere. Essential to see in a cinema and few tickets for tonight at TIFF are back on sale.

Wish people were talking about how Netflix's Adolescence clearly feels indebted Alan Clarke's Elephant and Gus Van Sant's Elephant. Both Elephants were also funded by TV broadcasters. Van Sant's was HBO and Clarke's was BBC. Always wish more people were talking about Alan Clarke.

I met Marta in Vienna, she told me the plot and I knew I'd love it. On their way home, harvesters encounter a wild bull. They climb the vineyard trees to escape, as they hide in the trees, night falls and the workers share stories. If you're hooked you need to see this tomorrow.

Tomorrow night! MDFF is hosting the Toronto premiere of Marta Mateus' FIRE OF WIND at TIFF. I'll be there to introduce: tiff.net/events/fire-...

I was on a run today and yelled at this car for driving too close to me. The guy actually stopped and I went up to confront him and just said "that's weird behaviour, man." I think it's a good sign that when I get worked up and flustered that I talk like The Dude in Big Lebowski.

Found the strangest set of Tim Roth stills for Made in Britain on Getty Images. They shot it like a promo for Growing Pains or Family Ties.

We used to be a civilized society. "I require for my déjeuner each morning a cereal with a hearty, Falstaffian proportion."

Just watched Black Bag. I wonder if Soderbergh collects his movie stubs.

Some say Matt and Mara is "Past Lives for Canadians" I prefer "the non-American Past Lives." This was clear when I visited Korea with Matt and Mara. When Past Lives was discussed the local take was why'd she pick the American? Mara rejects the guy who moved south of the border.

Matt and Mara is now available to stream in Canada for free on @cbcgem.bsky.social gem.cbc.ca/matt-and-mara

Had no idea Chaos The Manson Murders was an Errol Morris documentary. Jarring to not see Morris' name on the poster and it marked as a Netflix true crime doc that is indistinguishable from something like The Downfall of Diddy at first glance.

The budgets for Anora and The Wrestler are still way above almost all every Rainer Werner Fassbinder film. soundsimages.blogspot.com/2010/11/fass...

The Wrester and Anora both had a budget of 6 million. But if you calculate for inflation, if The Wrestler was made today it would have a budget of 9 million and if Anora was made in 2008 it would have a budget of 4 million.

The budget for The Electric State is $320 M. Adjusted for inflation, the 2007 $147 M budget for Transformers is $230 M. Studios double the budget with promotional spending, so lets say $460 M. If Netflix's VOD direct there's less spend. So $460 M vs $320 M is less shocking but still dumb.

J'adore Ted Fendt. Ted Fendt > Radwanski

I've always known it as L'Amour l'après-midi or Love in the Afternoon and occasionally Chloe in the Afternoon but this is the first time I've heard Love at 3pm or 'O Amor às Três da Tarde' which is apparently unique to Portugal. I kinda like it.

Music is pre-language. It's like the sun on your face.

Matt and Mara will begin streaming for free on @cbcgem.bsky.social March 8th. The people of the USA will be able to enjoy free streaming from our Canadian national broadcaster when they end this silly trade war and inevitably become our 11th province. www.cbc.ca/mediacentre/...

I can take people ripping apart Matt and Mara the very personal film that I spent years working on with my friends but if they come for my @letterboxd.social reviews of Charles Bronson impersonator Robert Bronzi movies it might break me.

Sean Baker is 54. I assumed he was 44. That he's been the same age since Tangerine. A 44 year old who looks like he's in his mid 30s. Surprised to learn he's older than Harmony Korine.

If Matt and Mara hits 20,000 views I’ll make my @letterboxd.social burner account public.

How @redvineski.bsky.social’s MDFF is boldly expanding its mission to support Canadian cinema, one film at a time – including Thursday's Toronto premiere of Philippe Lesage's WHO BY FIRE, which has been shockingly overlooked outside of Quebec. www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/ar...

PSA for Torontonians: check your eavestroughs and downspouts. Just prevented a basement flood. There's a lot of snow melting on roofs today. Make sure it is flowing away from the building and not pooling near the foundation because of snow blocking it.

To coincide with the Toronto premiere of Who by Fire at TIFF I'm hosting a masterclass with Philippe Lesage on Friday February 28th at 4pm at Humber Polytechnic Lakeshore Campus. www.universe.com/events/phili...

Two favourite needle drops of 2024: These Eyes by The Guess Who in Universal Language and Rock Lobster by the B-52s in Who by Fire. Both feel integral and must have been impossible to clear. I'm hosting a Q&A with Phillipe Lesage next week and will ask how he snagged the B-52s.

USA is now the 11th province of Canada and Ghostface, MPP Staten Island, has been sworn in as premier of USA.

I love this. I want a version of Matt and Mara dubbed in Spanish.

Of course Nikolay Michaylov our Bulgarian Canadian DP cites the 2017 Bulgarian film "3/4" shot by Julian Atanassov as an inspiration for Matt and Mara. We did actually study it closely and it's incredible. Also, other Steadicam films like Angst and Made in Britain. www.red.com/stories/matt...

Biggest laugh for me in Universal Language and maybe my favourite piece of art direction from any film in 2024 was the Rod Peeler "I never sleep" bench. Was amazed to learn from Matt that it's a real bench and Rod Peeler is Winnipeg realtor who receives a lot of prank calls.

MDFF Selects is hosting the Toronto premiere of WHO BY FIRE at TIFF. I'll be introducing the film and moderating a Q&A with director Philippe Lesage following the screening.

Full bibliography of Mara’s shelf from Matt and Mara can be found here in this 🧵

Was an honour to take part in Canada's Top Ten and be in a class photo with David Cronenberg.

three BANGERS coming to Mubi February 1st!!

I just asked chatgpt for "an idea for Kazik Radwanski film." It wasn't good or fleshed out. Just clumsily smashed the plot of How Heavy This Hammer and Anne at 13,000 ft together. Replaced skydiving with learning how to swim.

Those Gen Z film students came out to my Matt and Mara screening and of course they requested physical tickets to keep as a memento.

Today - Canada's Top Ten continues at Lightbox w/ MATT & MARA, SEEDS, 40 ACRES and shorts (all w/ directors in attendance), the Revue runs through the entire BEFORE SUNRISE/SUNSET/MIDNIGHT trilogy, the Fox remembers David Lynch w/ ERASERHEAD, more! Rundown: letterboxd.com/torontoplex/... #toRep

Italian reviews for Matt and Mara are in “breve incontro a Toronto"🤌🤌🇮🇹 "commedia (anti)romantica"🤌🤌🇮🇹 "viaggio in Niagara" 🤌🤌🇮🇹 cinecittanews.it/matt-and-mar...

All it takes is one good movie after a string of not so good movies to be like: man, nothing better than a Movie.

The first mumblecore films were actually made in Canada: The Bitter Ash, Le Chat dans le sac, Nobody Waved Good-bye, Winter Kept Us Warm, A Married Couple, Goin' Down the Road

This was so much fun. Deragh and I got to visit the poster archives of Posteritati. We discuss Kieślowski, Kiarostami, how Matt and Mara fits within the pantheon of Niagara Falls-set movies. youtu.be/1gXGa4f55yo?...

Spotted a very Hitchcockian cameo from director Tyler Taormina when rewatching Christmas Eve at Miller's Point.

Little known fact about Deragh: she lives near these tennis courts and has gotten very good at tennis. Love this piece on her double-barrelled role in Matt and Mara and Sofia Bohdanowicz’s Measures for a Funeral. She is an essential force in Canadian Cinema. t.co/bpMjby6bNk

Tonight at TIFF! Saw this in Paris last Nov and knew we needed it for MDFF Selects. A movie you need to see in cinemas but also a movie that needs to be viewed twice to really be seen. A Maximalist collage of family with over 25 characters and beautifully small moments of melancholy.
