Carl Sagan on sensible military spending and climate change.

This will surely help American's health status. Not. www.cbsnews.com/news/nih-lay...

Weather and climate research funds are being “chainsawed” from NOAA's budget. Last I checked, Louisiana & Florida, which are maximally susceptible to Hurricanes, voted Red in the last General Election. Wondering if residents there knew in advance this would happen.

🚨 Trump’s HHS just gutted NIOSH—laying off 85% of staff and shuttering key science programs. 🧪 Cancer research for firefighters? Halted. 😷 Respirator safety testing? Ceased. 📉 Decades of public health and worker safety science in jeopardy. Read more below ⬇️: www.cbsnews.com/news/worker-...

President Donald Trump today asked Congress to make massive and unprecedented cuts to the 2026 budgets of major federal science agencies. scim.ag/3Yszqnm

The Trump administration is dismantling cancer research. The National Cancer Institute's Board of Scientific Advisors — a group of top researchers and clinicians tasked with guiding the direction of federally funded cancer research — has been entirely disbanded.

Telling people to “do your own research” when in reality it means embracing disinformation from uncredentialed wellness grifters trying to peddle non-proven alternatives, and ignoring decades of rigorous peer-reviewed work from scientific experts, will kill people.

A new study by economists estimates that a 25% cut in science funding would result in a GDP decline similar in magnitude to the 2008 recession. They also estimate that a 75% cut to government science would trigger a larger GDP decline than in any recession since the Great Depression.

Deeply ashamed that scientists have to organize to call out the dangerous (as in life threatening) health disinformation the US government is generating #science #health #medicine www.science.org/content/arti...

🧵Measles isn’t the only vaccine-preventable disease making a comeback. Whooping cough is surging. Let’s talk about what’s happening and how you can stay safe. Keep reading 👇🧵

Vaccine scientists and medical leaders have announced they are launching an unprecedented initiative to react to vaccine misinformation and scientifically unfounded vaccine decisions by the U.S. government. scim.ag/3ES9r1Q

Nearly 800 NIH grants have been terminated so far, including some focused on HIV and AIDS, trans health, and COVID-19, after researchers were told their work was no longer an agency priority. https://cbsn.ws/3YkDndI

They are taking away our vaccines. Jay Bhattacharya is talking about eliminating mRNA vaccines. Meanwhile, RFK Jr. has managed to ratfuck the Novavax approval process.

A new analysis by Stanford epidemiologists predicts that measles could become endemic again in the US in the next 20 years. This would be a catastrophic failure and a result of anti-vax propaganda. Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease that was declared eliminated in the US in 2000.

Projected deaths from cessation of USAID PEPFAR funding www.thelancet.com/journals/ecl... a 90-day freeze is expected to result in ~60,000 excess deaths

If you're wondering what the projected mortality and morbidity rates might look like in a future defunded of US investment in science and health, here's a preprint article of some very sobering findings. The truth is heavy. That’s why it matters. ⬇️ papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Since 1945, American Universities have been envied worldwide for their Government-funded research. Hard to justify via corporate R&D, frontier science is vital to our long-term health, wealth, & security. To withhold University funding is to amputate the engines that Make America Great.

Calling fellow scientists - in this time of unprecedented attacks on research at universities, it is time we raise awareness about how science impacts your community and how your community impacts your research. A group of young scientists at Cornell has an... blogs.cornell.edu/asap/events-...

Remember that absurd letter the acting US attorney sent to medical journals last week, asking threatening questions about why they don’t publish more heterodox science? The New England Journal of Medicine got one as well. @aniloza.bsky.social has the story.

The consequences of attacking #science are “existential” for the US.

Researchers in the US are seeking career opportunities abroad as President Donald Trump’s administration slashes science funding and workforce numbers, finds an analysis of Nature’s jobs-board data. #Academicsky 🧪

Happy #EarthDay! 8 years ago, as we held the largest day of science advocacy in history, I wrote in the @theguardian.com: "Why March for Science? Because when it is attacked, only the elite benefit." These words hold true today. When we stand up for science, we stand up for justice and equality.

Harvard has some of the best scientists inventing new ways to early detect and cure cancer. But Trump’s ICE locks them in a detention center— for 2 months!

Bird flu likes this

Disgraceful.

More than 150 university presidents have signed a letter decrying the Trump administration. The statement — signed by Harvard, Princeton, Brown and other leading universities — denounces the White House’s ‘undue government intrusion.’

Almost every line of this story would have been simply unbelievable a few months ago: —Pioneering cancer researcher; —*Arrested* at airport in Boston; —Now indefinite ICE detention in Louisiana; —"Crime": not declaring some frog-embryo samples for research. Read it. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

A Lancet preprint estimates that if US funding is cut and not replaced, from 2025-2040 there will be 15.2 mil add'l AIDS deaths, 2.2 mil add'l TB deaths, 7.9 mil add'l child deaths from other causes, and 40-55 mil add'l unplanned pregnancies. @altusaid.altgov.info papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

People spend a lot of time wondering why the left is worse at using independent media to control the national narrative. A useful exercise is to ask why the left is also worse at selling snake oil and pyramid schemes, because I think the reasons are basically exactly the same.

Francis, the first Latin American Pope, died at 88 on Easter Sunday. After decades of conservative leadership, Pope Francis tried to reset the course of the Roman Catholic Church, emphasizing inclusion and care for the marginalized over doctrinal purity. May he rest in peace and glory

The nationwide measles outbreak now stands at more than 800 cases, but you probably don’t know that since RFK Jr is keeping a tight lid on that news. The orange areas in the below map show where the vaccination rate is under the 95% coverage target among kindergarteners. That’s a LOT of orange!

A government against science is a government actively opposed to objective truth.
