RFK Jr’s views are dangerous, misguided, and deeply disturbing. Frankly, his policies will hurt people. I will push back on any attempts to disrupt the health and safety of Illinoisans. abcnews.go.com/Politics/rfk...

Surely you have been using AlphaFold3 for your research project? If so, have you considered #AlphaBridge to analyze the output for macromolecule complexes prediction? Web server: alpha-bridge.eu Preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... New features coming soon!

UNC Chapel Hill gave me a chance at demonstrating my potential as a scientist. My PhD there was an experience of support and investment in me. It changed my life. I'm heartbroken to think of the future science leaders denied this same incredible opportunity. www.statnews.com/2025/02/19/t...

Graduate admissions being put on hold because of the chaos...

Pitt to pause PhD admissions, following Vanderbilt and USC, because of uncertainty of NIH funding to academic universities. Who will teach and train US scientists for pharma and biotech? Should we import them from countries that do? www.wesa.fm/health-scien...

Awful

Trump’s re-election to boost UK universities as fewer students choose US

If the admin wanted more US-born scientists, telling them at the last minute that they can't come to graduate school is probably not the best way to do it. www.statnews.com/2025/02/19/t...

The 'Google Co-Scientist' claims to be 'Accelerating scientific breakthroughs with an AI co-scientist' But does it? A closer look at its scientific validation as currently reported Please share and let me know if you have any comments, cheers! Andreas www.drugdiscovery.net/2025/02/20/t...

We wrote a short News & View piece to highlight the exciting work by Tina Kim and @deolsonlab.bsky.social at @ucdavisipn.bsky.social. Novel neuron-tagging techniques used to dissect the mechanism of psychedelics ⚡🧠🤯 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Again, there are literally not enough jobs to rapidly absorb all these displaced federal workers (who will also now be competing for non-government jobs with everyone else in the U.S.).

NEW: The USDA acknowledged that over the weekend, it accidentally fired "several" agency employees who are working on the federal government's response to the H5N1 avian flu outbreak. The agency adds it is trying to quickly reverse the firings.

"All FDA submissions delayed" You know that means in plain terms, right? *ALL* drugs currently under development in the US will not get to patients.

On Friday night, HHS ordered CDC to take down all flu vaccine campaign materials from its website. Materials are starting to come down. For example, a campaign explaining that flu shot can reduce flu severity from "wild to mild" is now offline. Left image is from Friday, right is now Meanwhile...

Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭 It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

My brain may be broken

This feels like proof that we learned nothing from Covid at all.

Many in biotech/private sector are boasting about their ways of funding and doing science But they are staffed with PhDs and postdocs we train in our NIH and NSF funded labs in universities With university labs lacking funds to train, the private sector will be profoundly harmed

People on here will post anything. "the genome instantiates a generative model of the organism." Not it isn't, that's an untestable metaphor.

Helpful table to determine how much your University or health system is set to lose if the NIH indirect cap is suddenly lowered to 15%. For SJSU it is $374k which is on the smaller end but devastating considering our other budget issues. datawrapper.dwcdn.net/l0ZqA/8/

If these NIH cuts stick -- and who knows in this environment -- my whole metro will to be screwed. Not to mention the actual lives affected. Talk about cutting off your nose for spite. www.al.com/news/2025/02...

The real hierarchy of needs

"Many of my good friends have their funding withdrawn or frozen based on the DEIA wording such as 'diverse microbes'" a scientist reliant on federal research grants told me, adding NSF proposals with terms including 'disabilities' and 'female' have been put on hold

Found a book at the library. Apropos of nothing

The justification here is gibberish. Philanthropic orgs don’t set their F&A rate independent of NIH. They gauge their rate based on NIH’s rate to stretch their far more limited dollars to support more research. Lowering NIH’s rate throws this balance into chaos. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...
