I like how this loops back into Bluesky's current safety failures. There's no "this is new ground" for this. People know what does & doesn't work in social, & silence in the wake of failure is a co-sign of that decision, just via the childish cowardice of not claiming it for fear of direct response.

stop acting like protecting marginalized people from harassment is going to cut into your bottom line, for fuck's sake

If you’re cleaning out your bookshelf for the holidays, consider donating your comics in good used condition to our Comics Drive! This year we are donating YA and middle grade books to LAUSD middle schools and adult books to Heavy Manners Library. Drop them off in our donation area at the show.

Why do you not mention the fact that this "ban" does not apply to cis children with precocious puberty, thus demonstrating that this is not a matter of safety but rather a discriminatory act aimed at trans children who do not want to go through a traumatic puberty that goes against their identity?

Fuck yourselves, you utter shitrag.
It's not banned for all under-18s - it specifically targets trans people. Kids requiring puberty blockers that aren't trans are still gunna be prescribed them and it's gunna have exactly the same amount of medical impact on them.
Cunts. The lot of ya.

I understand that every platform wants to grow, and I generally think that the growth of bluesky has been good because it's important to get people away from what twitter has become
but we can, and should, be better than pre-Elon twitter, and if that means limiting growth, so be it

and this should extend further than just Singal - I think the site should look at other prominent bad actors whose main goal on the internet is to bring harm to marginalized people and say, we don't want them here
including folks like LoTT and, yes, JK Rowling

the man has a very long track record at this point of causing harm to the trans community and of harassing trans people specifically, often to the point of trying to get them fired
I think that should be taken into account when you judge whether you want him on your platform

I understand not wanting to just ban people because of who they are, especially if they have not broken your rules on your own platform (leaving aside the question of whether he has or not for now), and not wanting to do policy by being yelled at
but you don't have to ignore someone's history

I also think "this person is prominent so we cannot enforce our policies against them" is a bad precedent to set and contributed greatly to the toxicity of twitter even before Elon's takeover
the amount of toxicity that can be traced to individual bad actors who serve as a hub is enormous

Congratulations to all the listees! Your work is major inspiration as we move to the next phase of the project: crafting a toolkit on writing more just fiction in our era of centralized surveillance tech copaganda!
