I hope the Metrotown/north shore line is compatible with the Expo and Millenium lines. It would make it easier to eventually extend the Expo line along Hastings from Waterfront to Willingdon and maybe ultimately SFU

When in Newfoundland go to France. I'm surprised that SPM and Newfoundland haven't done a combined tourism campaign. Kiss the Cod and visit France

Unfortunately coming from Vancouver, I found their stats rather lacking. TransLink probably has one of the best publicly available transit data in the world down to average daily boardings by bus stop. I am still a little salty they got rid of cost per boarding by bus route though

I'm curious how opinions will change about REM de l'Est after a few years of full REM operations

It's hard to believe that Metro Vancouver built the evergreen line and had a realistic chance to finish the Broadway subway from initial planning to operations before Eglinton was finished. Hell if we did the initial Expo line extension just to Fleetwood that may have been fishished too.

I can believe we are at the point that we can say the Eglinton crosstown is opening in ????

Note that keeping land prices low has helped those with money, say the top 25%, buy single family homes at the expense of everyone else having more affordable housing.

Maybe I'm just old now but match making for PVE is a strange concept to me but then again I do remember going random Diablo 2 games and playing with strangers

Honestly I just miss being able to host your own servers. Part of what makes TF2 such an enduring game for me is the ability to find a server where people are just trying to have a good time. I find all too often even with casual match making games are far too competitive for me.

Ah Toronto where I go to feel better about Vancouver's infrastructure costs

See Coquitlam council complaining that the SSMUH regulations are forcing the municipality to have less family oriented homes while their own regulations around SSMUH are what are restricting the development of family sized SSMUH

I feel like I need to specify that I am on the Vancouver side of the spectrum

Why does that sound so familiar 🤔

Other NA mass transit users: that frequency is amazing 🤩 Vancouver mass transit users: the world is literally ending 😡

For your consideration The Orange Box is a single game according to Giant bomb

For your consideration the Orange Box is a single game entry in the GB wiki

There is also West Van, Belcarra, and Anmore but the point stands. For example seawall was only possible because the warehouses in false creek were no longer needed due to containerisation

I guess you can call Ladner a hidden gem when everyone is scouring Surrey and can't find it.
comment in response to post
Ladner, and the rest of South Delta, barely like to be associated with North Delta so I find the Surrey labels kinda funny

Hell the average Canadian metro beats similar sized UK metros, other than London, for intracity transit. Though hopefully now that UK metro areas are allowed to centrally plan transit systems that will change

Doesn't help that the right wing NIMBYs are happy to take up the Left wing NIMBYS arguments in bad faith. Looking at you TEAM

Making choices means that you may have consequences but if you are studying something you are still "taking action" without doing anything

It's really disappointing that they fast tracked the REM and then slammed the door on anymore REM styles expansion before it even opened

I don't know if I should feel good or bad about this? maybe it is a good time to have one of those complex french emotions like ennui

I do find it strange that they include the operation budget of the PPP in the infrastructure cost. IIRC the Canada Line only ever quoted the capital cost not ongoing operation budget.

At second glance the Quebec government also seems happy to follow the Ontario PCs with spending huge amounts of money on transit projects with probably even less effective tram projects
comment in response to post
To be fair I do think the PCs spending on transit, while horribly mismanagement, is extremely remarkable for any government let alone a conservative one. Doug Ford knows he needs to keep the suburbs happy and happy to spend to do so.

Don't worry, having a pair of mechanical delays let's the TTC management better distribute the trains instead of them all getting bunched up in the same spot.

I wish TransLink could get Metrolinx levels of funding but only if we keep our still too expensive but relatively affordable construction costs.

schrodinger's planning: there are multiple states of possible zoning but you can't know unless you actually try to rezone what or will be.
comment in response to post
Well even though it does comply with all guidelines we had a few retired homeowners and the local anti displacement activist made some complaints so we can't rezone this value village lot .
comment in response to post
Since they don't rezone when they finish a plan they are literally performative. They spend all this time and money to make a plan and then force developers to come hat in hand on the hope that their development will be approved despite already complying with the plan

Well they did manage to take the view cones to get a trim

I feel like Singapore is a much better, though far from perfect, blueprint to build our non-market housing plans around. But the fact it is designed to work within a market system means that there a those on the left who will not entertain the idea

I'll take an extra 5-10°C over even mild humidity
comment in response to post
I remember a few years ago when it got into the mid 40s in the BC interior it was like death, at least there wasn't any humidity so you could still take advantage of evaporative cooling methods. I remember friends that didn't have AC just switching out damp shirts to keep cool

There also seems to be some other data artifacts in the pre 1950 data presenting as horizontal strips. Like you said probably some inconsistency in pre war data collection

I'll be honest the Three was one of the last places I expected to defend buying Chinese built ferries but I am not familiar with the author of this piece.

It's amazing that a handful of unnamed stereotypes had more character than a combined 43 heroes with backstories written by what was one of the most well renowned developers known for their stories.

Interesting to see how much more concentrated the fertility rate by age is in Canada vs USA.
comment in response to post
See the cost of Washington State's MV Suquamish at 122 million USD vs the BC ferry Salish class for 67 million USD. Pretty much the same size ships for half the price plus a much more modern design. Buying Canadian would end up at much higher cost and much longer timelines.

Makes Canadian entry into the EU look relatively simple

As an outsider it is baffling that giving other metro areas integrated transit systems like London was never a major policy plank in any party's political campaigns. It seems like the current reforms just kind of happened in the background with little fanfare despite being a huge change in practice
comment in response to post
Transit is inherently monopolistic and privatisation was ideological. Operation can be run by private companies but planning and overall network design and integration really need to be in the hands of a regional government body.
comment in response to post
In Canada I would just do proportional representation on a per province level otherwise things could get complicated with regional representation as you pointed out, while not perfect I don't see it causing even minor distortions

@milesintransit.com you better have listened to the entirety of the Tragically Hips discography on this trip. It would only be fitting.
