A century of rising CO₂ has increased photosynthesis of mature trees in tropical forests. This is our conclusion in study led by Sophie Zwartsenberg in @newphyt.bsky.social. We did novel isotope analyses in tree rings from Australia, Thailand & Bangladesh. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

🌳New study exploring the importance of tree diversity for C cycling and climate change mitigation in tropical forests. From a great team, brilliantly led by @mixedforests.bsky.social. Results are nicely discussed in the press release: uni-freiburg.de/en/tree-dive...

PUBLICATION 🚨 for the 🧪 #root lovers @bsky.app 😀 Read in PLSO dx.doi.org/10.1007/s111... how #SWIR imaging can help to distinguish roots by #species and #vitality ... highlighting the potential of #spectral analysis for root #phenotyping. P.S. @bsky.app -still waiting for any icon resembling a root

#JustOut #openaccess 2nd PhD paper of R. Nyawasha 👏 ! A nice study about SOC stocks in a smallholder communal area of 🇿🇼 and how they are impacted by land use, soil type & historical management. Also includes a comparison w\ predicted SOC stocks from AfSIS @cirad.bsky.social doi.org/10.1016/j.ca...

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

It matters that scientists speak out against what is being done to US science. Staying silent is neither "objective" nor "staying out of politics". Silence now *is* political - it supports the status quo, says "nothing to worry about". We need to sound the alarm. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) should not be used for luxury emissions.

Our new paper, based on data from 1,705 studies, shows that pesticides are toxic to organisms they are not intended to harm, including fungi, microbes, plants, insects, & vertebrates such as ourselves. Questions the wisdom of applying over 3 million tonnes of them every year...

In Nature Climate Change, we show that a year above 1.5 °C signals that Earth is most probably within the 20-year period that will reach the Paris Agreement limit. @natclimchange.bsky.social

Two papers in Nature Climate Change suggest that exceeding 1.5 °C in 2024 may indicate that we have entered a multi-decadal period of 1.5 °C average global warming. https://go.nature.com/4hR9GYO https://go.nature.com/3WVdJM1 🧪

Many U.S. science agencies abruptly abandoned normal operations last week to focus on a slew of executive orders from President Donald Trump. The torrent of activity left many researchers bewildered—and fearful of what might come next. scim.ag/4jMPYiY

🚨 all EGU journals have cancelled their Twitter/X feeds 👏👏 But for reasons beyond me have decided not to engage with BlueSky 🤷 - if you’d like a BlueSky presence for your favourite EGU journal - I’d suggest getting in touch with @eurogeosciences.bsky.social (or liking this message?) pls RT 😀👏

Potential mangrove #restoration would necessitate an investment of $40.0–52.1 billion, yielding net gains in ESV of $231–725 billion. An estimated of 19.4 Tg C can be sequestrated in #mangrove soils, generating $68.6–$236 million via blue C trading. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
