In A King’s Genocide and its sequel, I’m combining Christian mythology and the Cthulhu mythos to create a compelling story and game in general. Dark fantasy, this will be. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

If there’s a game that knows how to make an immersive world that leaves you wondering what else is happening in it, it’s VA-11 HALL-A. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Final Fantasy V is pretty good so far. It feels like an evolution of the job system from FFI and FFIII. The story feels like a continuation of how FFIV did it. If you’re trying to make an RPG that doesn’t overstay its welcome, you might want to look at FFV. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

If it doesn’t feel like anyone is interested in your game, don’t despair yet. You just haven’t gathered enough of an audience yet. Your game IS awesome. You just need to find the right way to convey this. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Final Fantasy XIV is great. I only ever got up to Shadowbringers, but the story should be up there with the greats. The only reason I haven’t played past that is because I have a video game to make, and I have no job. Steady income is the reason I don’t do MMOs. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

You’ve played House in Fata Morgana. But you should also play Saya No Uta. Especially if you’re making a horror game. #vndev #indiegamedev #gamedev

Obligatory reminder that all artists that help you with your game(s) are awesome! #indiegamedev #vndev #gamedev

Metaphor ReFantazio is done and dusted for me. Great gameplay! After the first playthrough, text starts to get a little longer than I’d like, but still great overall. Definitely play Metaphor if you ever make an RPG. I suspect the Clair Obscur team did! #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

On the Game Boy Color, I fondly remember playing The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. I played Seasons too, but I like Ages more. I really like the ring mechanic where wearing a certain ring causes a special effect. I remember using the Subrosian Ring a lot. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

I can’t say I understand why we haven’t gotten a real sequel to Star Fox 64. I don’t think it takes rocket science to understand what made that game work. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

I love images like this. It doesn't matter who you are as a #gamedev, everyone starts in a corner of a bedroom with nothing but passion, a dream and lots of hours at the computer.

In the world of A King’s Genocide and its sequel, there’s a magic system in place similar to Final Fantasy or Shin Megami Tensei. You won’t see really any of it in A King’s Genocide on account of it being a visual novel. But you may very well see it in the sequel. #vndev #gamedev #indiegamedev

The journey to creating your game will be long and difficult. Who knows what twists and turns are on the path. But if you take your time, and get the roadblocks taken care of, you’ll get your game done. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Despite what your critics say, you and your game are in fact awesome! #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

While A King’s Genocide is a visual novel, the sequel is going to be taking some notes from Odin Sphere. But when all is said and done, my intent is for the sequel to look like A King’s Genocide but with new features added on top. Start small, then work your way up. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

My favorite Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons is probably Magical Melody. I don’t think I ever reached the credits, but I really loved being able to set up my farm just about anywhere. #gamedev #vndev #indiegamedev

Artists are a cornerstone of any good game. A good artist will draw people towards your game, while a bad one will make people say, ā€œā€¦Eh, doesn’t look interesting.ā€ Don’t neglect artists. Artists rock! All of you are awesome! #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

If you’ve never played Odin Sphere or 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, play it! You might get inspiration for your game. Really, you can’t go wrong playing any Vanillaware game to my knowledge. You might learn something since each game they make is different from the others. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

I’m still loving Metaphor ReFantazio. I gotta say, the reports I heard growing up of turn based battle systems being dead are greatly exaggerated. Final Fantasy could totally have another game with a turn based system. There’s still room for innovation. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

If you’re making a video game, you are an awesome person and your game will be the game to push someone to make their own game! Never forget that! #vndev #indiegamedev #gamedev

Remember, things may be uncertain for you right now. May even be scary. But you’re awesome, you’ll get through this in your own way! In the meantime, channel those fears and anxieties into working on your passion project. It at least should get your mind off things. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Fully orchestrated music in video games is cool. But there’s something about music from the N64 era that is lost today. I haven’t heard music as unique as Ocarina of Time’s or Donkey Kong 64’s music in a long, long time. #vndev #gamedev #indiegamedev

I didn’t play a whole lot of Kirby growing up and don’t even really play the games today. But I have fond memories playing Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. It’s the only N64 era 2D sidescroller I can think of. If you make a side scroller, it couldn’t hurt to play it. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

I don’t have the money to get Clair Obscur, but judging by the positive word of mouth, that game’s team learned all the right things from the RPG’s that inspired them! Kudos to them! #gamedev #vndev #indiegamedev

I don’t care for rhythm games really at all. But DJ Hero always looked cool to me. Not cool enough for me to want to buy the games, but cool nonetheless. Especially when Daft Punk was in one of the games. #vndev #indiegamedev #gamedev

Paper Mario was probably the very first RPG I played growing up. I’d say the mechanics still hold up well! After all, we got people making spiritual successors like Bug Fables. You couldn’t go wrong going to Paper Mario for gameplay inspiration. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

A King’s Genocide is going to be a visual novel. The sequel to A King’s Genocide is going to be an action RPG. There’s a compelling tale I want to tell and I’ll be adding a new mechanic with each game. That’s why we’re going from visual novel to Action RPG. #gamedev #vndev #indiegamedev

Follow your passion, because if you aren’t doing that, then what’s the point? Make your video game! #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

I was first introduced to Atlus games with Snowboard Kids 2 for the Nintendo 64. Little did I know that they were making JRPG’s that would one day grab my attention. Only reason I found out about Shin Megami Tensei was through Devil Survivor Overclocked. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

A King’s Genocide tells a story about an angel, Aracelia, and her descent into madness as a series of murders occur. The game’ll be done when it’s done. I’m unemployed, so it’s on the back-burner until I have an income again. Gotta love today’s job market… /s #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Video games are just the best. In my childhood, movies, books, and other things have never hooked me like my Nintendo 64 could. If you’re making a game, don’t give up. There’s a person out there destined to play your game all night. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Fellow indie game devs, let's talk marketing. I know you have a game to market, I do too, but this isn't Twitter. On Twitter you just spam a bunch of hashtags and scream about your game, but this is social media, emphasis on social. You have to engage with people, and not just on your own posts.

I distinctly remember playing Godzilla Domination on my Game Boy Advance while we drove cross-country to visit family. It was probably good for a Godzilla beat-em-up game. I just remember wondering why I couldn’t play as Mecha-King Ghidorah. Yes, Godzilla is awesome. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Your "dumb little projects" are so important during this harrowing time. Don't forget that. Your creativity has value, for yourself and for the world.

If you’re hard-pressed finding an action system to study, you may want to look at NieR: Automata. Like FFXVI, that was one of few action combat systems where I figured out and enjoyed the combat. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Sometimes you just gotta take a break from working on your game. (Or job searching.) And that’s okay! You can’t do much of anything if your brain is fried. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

Donkey Kong 64 gets a lot of flack, but I loved it. Did it have too many collectibles? Sure! But it pales in comparison to Breath of the Wild’s and Tear’s of the Kingdom’s Koroks. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

I’ve mentioned SMT V felt slow and needlessly difficult at times, but Persona has its issues too. Persona 3, the original, had needlessly strict social links. Persona 5 had a super boss that you’re locked out of when starting the last segment of the game. #gamedev #indiegamedev #vndev

If you’re struggling today, as I am, just know this: YOU HAVE NOT FAILED. It’s the world that has failed. Keep calm and bugger on.
