If he wasn’t bleeding and injured she’d have smacked him so hard but relief more than anything flooded her. “You are such an ass…” She said through heartfelt tears.
((Let’s face it, Ren and Rhys thrive on drama so it’s so on par for them. 🤣))

something as small as Ivy needing an extra break, sore throat, but something in Ren knew better. “Wait a bit, see if she returns. If not, we need to find our friends.” She began to scan the audience, making note of where everyone was and if they looked concerned too.

Ren had been to more plays, performances and operas than most. The moment Alex turned as the music started again, she looked too and saw the Understudy.
She shook her head and furrowed her brow. “Something is wrong. Ivy’s understudy is on stage.”
A fear began to gnaw at her. It could have been

She'd have to talk about her feelings. And that frightened her more than her father or the threat of him ever did.
"Of course, love. I have two letters so far. I've kept them in case I needed them for more clues. I'll show you when we get home."

A small smile spread on her lips at his teasing but his concern for her is what warmed her heart the most. She knew she'd have to tell him, not about the letters -- no that would be easy. She'd show them as soon as they got home. It was the other thing she had been holding back from talking about...

"I'm sorry I didn't say anything sooner. It just seemed we never had a good time."
She took a breath and remained quiet for a few, listening to the music and intertwining her fingers with his.

Ren flinched once she realized she had let it slip she had received more than one letter. And Alex had a point. She knew that they were always stronger together but she had clearly begun to underestimate her father and that put them both in danger.
"I..." She started got argue but he was right.

Ren let out a soft sigh, keeping her voice quiet so only Alex could hear and leaning a bit closer to him.
"I haven't told anyone. Just you. I've been wanting to just handle it. I had figured, or rather hoped, he'd have taken the hint after I didn't respond to his first letter..."

barely hidden beneath his voice, there was no doubt in his eyes. Just unwavering certainty. How had she gotten so lucky? Ren softened, just a little, pressing his fingers between hers. “You are helping,” she whispered. “Being here with me. But you deserve to know, we need to keep an eye out...”

But that life had found her regardless. She exhaled sharply through her nose, rolling her shoulders back. She wasn’t going to let him ruin this night. Her father had already taken enough from her. She turned to Alex, finding his gaze steady, waiting—and even now, even with the sharp edge of fury

Her fingers tightened around his, noting how cold they were getting. It took a lot to make her unsettled, & she was unsettled. Her father had woven his reach even deeper into her life than she had realized. Ren had spent years beyond his grasp. That she was above the kind of games noblemen played.

If he was here, he hadn't been the one to send the tickets. Alex leaned over to her & she took a breath.
"The tickets. Ian supposedly sent them but he's right over there. I think," She took a quick breath. "I think it's from my father." She said, hushed. She took his hand & squeezed it.

She knew Alex would have noticed her demeanor, it was much different than how she acted at the wedding. But she wasn't wanting to worry him, didn't want to ruin a perfect evening for them. They took their seats & that's when she saw Ian who gave her a quick wave and the color drained from her face.

As they walked through the foyer of the Opera House, Ren's eyes darted from side to side. The letter she had received earlier with tickets to the opera had a small veiled threat that she knew had to be from her father. She was grateful that Ian sent her the tickets but there was something more...

Ren applied more pressure to the wound, ripping off part of her undershirt for a bandage. “Now you owe me a new shirt…” She tried to joke, but it couldn’t stop the slight tremble in her voice, the concern.

Ren smiled as Ivy took the bouquet of yellow roses and nodded at Alex’s sentiment. “Wouldn’t have missed it for the world!” She kissed both her cheeks before moving back to Alex’s side.

Ren flounced in and glided up to Ivy, giving her a gentle hug. "Darling, you look incredible & I have to thank you for an excuse to dress up." She turned to Alex "I think Alex looks quite dashing. Don't you think?" She winked as he handed Ivy the bouquet. "You're going to be phenomenal, I know it!"

"Who else am I gonna spoil if you don't do what I say?" She worries at her bottom lip, clearly concerned and trying to refrain from letting too much emotion show.

“There’s no easy way to deliver this news… I’m just at a loss for words. I should probably tell Lark too… I know his parents have spent most of their lives after the Fifth Blight looking for a cure.”
