Despite all the pressure from wealthy backers, the support for vouchers is far from overwhelming. There are many representatives concerned that they’re hurting their school district by supporting vouchers because they will defund their already underfunded local schools.

Yesterday afternoon, former Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) posted the message below. Concluding “History will remember this day—when an American President and Vice President abandoned all we stand for.”

The recent measles outbreak in West Texas has led to the tragic death of an unvaccinated child. This marks the first measles-related death in the U.S. in a decade. The CDC declared measles eradicated in the year 2000, but outbreaks have resurfaced due to declining vaccination rates.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has launched multiple investigations into Texas' natural gas producers for their actions during Winter Storm Uri. While Texans were left freezing without power, large amounts of natural gas were exported out of the state.

School vouchers are not a new idea. They were invented by racist southern segregationists who were trying to get around the Supreme Court decision outlawing segregation. They called vouchers “school choice,” hoping white parents could use public money to send their kids to all white private schools.

Today, I met with the President of CC Young Senior Living, Russell Crews, President for Juliette Fowler Community, Nicole Gann, and representatives from Leadingage TX to discuss the future of senior living services across Texas.
