New Hampshire residents say that housing is their top issue. 🏠 Housing: 29% 💰 Taxes: 10% 📚 Education: 8% 💊 Drugs and addiction: 7% 🏦 The economy: 7%

Massachusetts released its Unlocking Housing Production Commission report with a series of bold policy recommendations. 🚗 eliminate min parking reqs 🏡 duplexes on all lots, quadplexes if utilities 📐 min lot size reform 🏗️ single-stair reform 💰funding incentives www.remainplaces.com/post/a-bold-...

Unless overcome, blue state NIMBYism is going to grow Republicans' electoral college advantage and price millions of people from targeted populations out of the opportunity to find sanctuary under anti-MAGA legal regimes.

New York's (de)congestion pricing, which charges $9 to drive into Manhattan below 60 St, has reduced traffic, increased ridership, reduced subway crime, and is raising funds to fix the decaying transit system. Rare for a public policy to have this many benefits!

Congestion pricing is already speeding up buses and increasing ridership. Now we need new protected bus lanes to build on those gains and accommodate all those new riders!

For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 1%, it can collect $13. For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 0.1%, it can collect $26. Laying off 7,000 IRS employees (during tax season) isn't about efficiency. It's about making it easier for the rich to evade taxes.

Any Trump supporters care to defend his surrender to Putin? What’s your best argument for why an American president should give a Russian dictator just what he wants?

In 2019, RFK Jr visited Samoa to spread anti-vax lies, spurring a measles outbreak that led to the deaths of 83 people - mostly children. We can’t let that tragedy repeat in Texas. The MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles. Let’s stop the spread. www.cbsnews.com/news/texas-m...

Sorry who are the Dems he’s referring to?

Auckland went all in on YIMBY, and the results are clear: 43,500 new homes in 10 years, and rents down 28% relative to peers. www.population.fyi/p/beyond-ske...

German electricity generation mix, 1990-2024. After the nuclear exit, are they using more coal*? No, less. More natural gas then? No, less. Could they have used even less coal and gas if they hadn't shut down nuclear? Yes. *) Lignite = brown coal. Graph: www.cleanenergywire.org/factsheets/g...

Go Rhode Island! A great place to live - glad they are making room for more people to learn their exotic accent ;)

Congrats NAHB, you did it!

US Govt has become the Lonely Island “Threw it on the Ground” video. Thanks MAGA! youtu.be/gAYL5H46QnQ?...

At some point Economics 101 will go from being a cliche to being banned as too woke.

Boston and its regional transit provider, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, announced yesterday a citywide effort to give MBTA buses priority at signaled intersections to improve bus speed and reliability. www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/boston-...

“The grim status quo is the legacy of a revolution we have mostly forgotten. … Where walking is welcome and convenient, it is common – and where walking is common, it is safer.”

If someone chooses to live in a smaller home in the inner city in part to avoid a long commute, they generally don’t pressure society to build them a bigger house with more stuff. So if you choose a bigger stuff-filled house in the suburbs, don’t expect society to build you a fast car commute.

this will be but a temporary pause the time of cheap capital is over CO's permit cliff - like most other states - arrived in 2024 and rents will skyrocket shortly www.denverpost.com/2025/01/24/m...

Hard agree. The drop off/pickup culture around schools is so depressing. You see it even in areas with good transit or school-provided buses, for reasons that have always eluded me.

“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath 50 reasons to want walkable streets.

My favorite content on Bluesky so far is the #urbanism stuff so I thought I’d add mine to the mix with a thread about the cities where I’ve lived. Maybe I’ll expand it in some way, who knows?

I enjoyed talking with @kqednews.bsky.social, sharing my concerns about the proposal to freeze North Beach in amber through blanket historic preservation www.kqed.org/news/1202220...

By blocking infill housing in particular, restrictive land-use regulations explain 7% of San Diego residents living in fire-prone areas. Absent land-use liberalization to allow more infill housing, mounting fire risk will affect nearly twice as many San Diego households.

Want to lower the cost of housing? Stop building on-site parking! “Studies have shown that providing on-site parking in California raises apartment construction costs by around $36,000 per unit and increases rents by about $200 per month” www.planetizen.com/news/2024/04...

It's a goal of mine to help make this the most famous, well-known and UNDERSTOOD quote about cities in history. Please share it as much as you can. #InducedDemand

Latest #CongestionPricing win — @mta.info is moving forward with the Second Avenue Subway extension thanks to #CongestionPricing revenue!

If you’re interested in better cities but haven’t read much about it, here are some starter books I’d recommend: Walkable City by @jeffspeck.bsky.social Human Transit (new edition) by @humantransit.bsky.social Road to Nowhere by @parismarx.com Curbing Traffic by @modacitylife.com #UrbanismBookClub

The start of 2025 means it is precisely 25 years until net zero targets in the UK, EU, US, etc fall due. Every quarter now represents one per cent of the available time to fully decarbonise industrialised economies. Happy New Year! www.businessgreen.com/news/4392880...

Had no idea such a high percentage of BlueSky users were named Sarah.

Great day for anyone who cares about the future of our planet, quality of life, or those who rely on transit. Huzzah!
