The game was later ported to the GameCube in three different versions: Doubutsu no Mori+, Animal Crossing, and Doubutsu no Mori e+. Each version added new villagers and features. Many characters like Blathers, Kapp’n, Tortimer, and the Able Sisters were not present in the original N64 version.

It’s pretty fun but it’s 100 levels to finish the game and there’s no save or password feature which means you have to play through the whole game all in one sitting. That’s my biggest complaint. 😮‍💨

The cartridge functions as a personal assistant that has features like a calculator, a phone book, a local email/pager, a calendar, and even a TV/VCR remote control. I can’t seem to get it running on my Analogue Pocket or my Game Boys to try it out, but it’s still cool in a weird way nonetheless.

Yeah, there were a lot more games in Japan that used the mouse so it got more support and bundles over there. Really wish it had done better over here… 😢

Yeah, it was pretty obtuse and difficult, but I still played it constantly and the soundtrack is burned into my brain for the rest of my life. 😂

This track is in so many of my playlists! Such an awesome soundtrack. I played this game so much as a kid, even though I was completely garbage at it and never quite understood what was going on half the time. 😅

Makaimura on the Famicom was a big deal in 1986 when it first released. It would be the first game to utilize a 128KB cartridge, effectively striking a massive blow to Nintendo’s Disk System which had released just 4 months prior and touted 112KB of disk storage as one of its major selling points.

The new artwork they did for these games is probably some of the best in the entire series, especially the sketch drawings on the back of the manuals. I bought these as they came out back in 1999 but they were destroyed in a flood about a decade ago, so I’ve slowly been rebuying them again. 😮‍💨

The player controls a fairy named Wanda who must guide Mario (blinded by a bucket on his head) to the end of each stage through various traps and obstacles. Wanda can “point and click” on objects (using the mouse) to interact with them and help guide Mario to the goal.

It originally made use of Nintendo’s Super Scope light gun, but the developers couldn’t quite make the mechanics function properly and a decision was made to use the SFC mouse instead.

Yeah, I love the Famicom clamshells! Some of the early 90s Sunsoft games like this and Hebereke used them which was really cool.

It’s far from a perfect game, but its soundtrack and graphics are top notch and its gameplay is still pretty fun. I’m really happy the Famicom cover art used the awesome movie poster artwork instead of the NES’ generic photo of Mohawk.

It’s a little awkward using the controller as the mouse pointer at times, but if you like TIM then you’ll still probably enjoy it. 👍

Funnily enough, the Makaimura / Ghosts ‘n Goblins theme was added last minute to the game, presumably to help with its marketability. Much like The Incredible Machine, you must setup a series of Rube Goldberg-like devices to solve a mission scenario that is given to you.
