btw, i will tell you this - i have been talking to people all day, and the media is missing, whether intentionally or not, how absolutely, volcanically angry the people who have been fired are, not because they lost their jobs, but because their jobs matter, *to us*

A little story about repression and why I've never treated arrests as something anyone should do: for those of you who don't remember, Occupy Wall Street was a massive movement that was centered around encampments that popped up in city centers across the US (and Canada and UK) from Sept to Nov 2011

Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park) has some thoughts that feel very relevant today:

Happening now: protesters are outside the Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago this evening. People are in line to see House of Reps Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for an event tonight promoting his recently released book. Crowd chanting at them, "we don't need a book tour!"

Agreed, pass it on.

NEW: Pregnancy became far more dangerous in Texas after the state banned abortion, according to ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis, which found the sepsis rate for women hospitalized as they miscarried in the 2nd trimester shot up by more than 50%. https://propub.li/43487Tj

I don’t know who thought that RFK Jr./this administration might be good for the #LongCovid community, that they might actually back up their eugenic statements about improving America’s health and reducing chronic illness with research into our condition. They don’t care. They won’t help.

So I read this, and as someone who's spent their entire career in the trenches of "how do we keep the tension between Good Guys and Bad Guys interesting," I have Some Thoughts www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/v...

for pity’s sake, I am BEGGING university leaders to stop framing this issue in terms of what this will cost the university. people dont care! EXPLAIN WHAT THIS WILL COST THE PUBLIC: closed hospitals and clinics, skipped treatments, loss of access to experimental drugs, unemployment, recession

Okay, so, using CDR for stuff that we can abate using other techs is really, really bad and could endanger the entire project of climate action Now to take a big sip of coffee and see which companies are buying up carbon removal www.nature.com/articles/s41... www.qcintel.com/carbon/artic...

The main DEI page from @agu.org has been modified to take diversity out of the title. Glad to see it's not deleted entirely, but hey AGU, we're watching what you do and remembering the big game you once talked about supporting your diverse membership. Today vs. January

Hey man I have enough “fuck this” to go for decades, no need to pace me

Sure is a good time to remind everyone, incl scientists and engineers, that they are laborers and have a common interest against these ghouls

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the state’s Republican leadership haven’t uttered a word as Texas universities researching things like cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s are about to take a massive hit from the Trump Administration. Why won’t they stand up for Texas?

FOUR DEADLY PLANE CRASHES IN FOUR WEEKS: One dead, four hospitalized after two jets collide on runway at Scottsdale, Arizona airport.

Worth mentioning you can write a review for the "Gulf of America" and tell Google and all how dumb it is

Sell your Teslas, dump your stock, join the picket lines. Hurting Tesla is stopping Musk, and stopping Musk will help save lives and our democracy. The stakes couldn't be higher and no one is coming to fix this- not our politicians and not our media. It's up to collective effort.

I would genuinely like everyone to have the chillest, nicest day possible tomorrow. I'd like you to have a day so chill & nice you see the face of god and realize it's your face, your neighbor's face, your enemy's face, your mom's face, your cat's face, your dog's face, a rock's face, your butt's fa

Huh. Who could’ve predicted this? *touches earpiece* I’m hearing that everyone could’ve predicted this.

While university presidents are huddling w/ teams of communications consultants and lawyers, carefully crafting statements to respond to the attack on science, the Trump administration is making massive, rapid-fire moves. An asymmetrical battlefield, where consequences only flow one way.

just over here photoshopping muppets onto the cover of elle magazine: thread

The first speculative bubble in history was caused by a virus. Let's talk about 'Tulipmania', which shaped the economy of the Netherlands 1630-1637 CE. The Dutch ambassador to Turkey's leader Suleiman the Great named a gifted flower "tulipant" a Turkish word for turban (often decorated w a flower)

Here’s a story with some numbers. The proposed cuts are unfathomable: a 60% reduction to NSF would be the end of American science as we know it.

RIGHT, I noticed that Google’s AI thingy has a new image generation facility. So I asked it to generate me some images of climate change. The results weren’t great tbh … 🧵

democrats held the whitehouse for 12 out of the last 16 years. if the presidency has been this powerful the whole time one has to why they've used it to accomplish so little. democrats have held the presidency for half of the 21st century so far, why do things only change when republicans have it?

This is part of the lesson from the 2013 people's filibuster pro-abortion protests in Texas: gumming up the system works. Texas Dems were never going to win the ultimate fight, and there's a lot to say about organizing opportunities lost afterward, but: winning for a day was fuckin great
