While #Japan is no stranger to all kinds of natural hazards, it's not often making international headlines involving #wildfires. Currently, the country is experiencing the worst wildfire incident in more than 30 years, near the coast of northern Honshu (Iwate Prefecture):

Following a workshop on Earth system #tippingpoints at the @ec.europa.eu's Joint Research Centre, @pik-potsdam.bsky.social colleagues and I have contributed to a policy brief with recommendations for how the EU can/should move forward--check it out!: publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/h...

IMTs are quietly talking about what the current political environment means for this year's wildland fire suppression efforts, but it deserves a larger and more public consideration. 1/

1/n Please see our new paper in Nature Communications! We used 1,851 tree-ring fire-scar sites and contemporary fire perimeters to quantify the prevalence of wildfire from 1600-1880 compared to 1984-2022. 🧪🌍🔥 Our key findings are as follows ...

The uncertainty caused by Trump’s funding and hiring freezes has limited training, postponed work to reduce flammable vegetation in areas vulnerable to wildfire and left some firefighters with little choice but to leave the force.

The loss of megafauna over the last 50,000 years has caused ecological theories to be based on already-degraded ecosystems. https://doi.org/10.1111/oik.11134 #Megafauna #Coexistence #Megaherbivore #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome #CommunityEcology #LargeHerbivore

One of our supporters shared this with us—people are getting creative tonight!

We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

NEW: President Trump's hiring freeze has stopped the onboarding of seasonal federal firefighters, including those who work for agencies called on to help battle the devastating L.A. fires, creating a potential shortfall ahead of the next fire season. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

Curious how forest microclimate and soil microbes drive carbon cycling in a changing climate? 🌡️🌳🍄We're offering a 4-year PhD position at @mycopat.bsky.social, SLU-Uppsala. A cool new project in collaboration with @linegreis.bsky.social Apply now or help spread the word! www.slu.se/en/about-slu...

Excited to share the first paper from my PhD! Here, we found that soils with Sphagnum moss produced the most carbon at near-zero temperatures. All other soils in the transect produced more carbon, with higher incubation temperature. Sphagnum moss continues to intrigue www.borenv.net/BER/archive/...

NSF grantees - people who have already received their grants based on a previously funded and approved research proposal - are being told to stop any activities related to DEI and accessibility. Call this what it is: government censorship of ongoing research projects. www.opm.gov/policy-data-...

This Executive Order does not just impact US science but will also impact international science collaboration, which many scientific fields such as Polar Research depend on heavily. Many of our US research partners are softmoney-funded through federal research grants. new.nsf.gov/executive-or...

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

I woke up this morning still bewildered by the fire and water conversation held in SoCal yesterday. I feel I should put together a thread about it, but I don't know where I'd start... OK, I'd start with the fire triangle. 1/

🌍 How can #Palaeoecology help define #PlanetaryBoundaries under #GlobalChange? Our latest work in @globalchangebio.bsky.social explores the long-term perspective needed to guide sustainability. 🌱 This is an output of the PB WG from @pages-ipo.bsky.social!📢 🔗 Read more: doi.org/10.1111/gcb....

Postdoc opportunity w/Solomon Dobrowski and me! U Montana, in partnership with the NC Climate Adaptation Science Center, is hiring a talented scientist with an interest in climate connectivity and species range shifts among protected areas. $70k/year. #SpeciesOnTheMove #RangeShifts

Great new study on future #boreal tree cover changes! #Paleoecology offers a complementary perspective: We previously found that open woodlands in E-Siberia during the Early Holocene coincided with higher #wildfire activity, proposing a potential future "open woodland-fire feedback" 🔥🌲🌏🧪⚒️ 1/2

Coring karri trees (Eucalyptus diversolor) today. Incredible stem water storage - check it out ( also incredibly challenging trees to core)

No, “brush clearance” could not have “prevented” the Palisades Fire, but fuel reduction would reduce the firestorm’s intensity. And as @amycardinal.bsky.social put it so well, “it’s not only about wildfire risk reduction, but living daily in healthy landscapes that are properly stewarded.”

Is there a link between #ClimateChange & increasing risk/severity of #wildfire in California--including the still-unfolding disaster? Yes. Is climate change the only factor at play? No, of course not. So what's really going on? [Thread] #CAfire #CAwx #LAfires iopscience.iop.org/a...

Reminder not to fly private drones near active wildfires 🚫

We reconstructed 300 yrs of fire history in transverse ranges of CA from fire scars in the Bigcone Douglas-fir. The fire history of chaparral/BCDF may reflect fire history in the LA Basin, to some degree. A paper from Keith Lombardo’s dissertation is here: link.springer.com/content/pdf/...

In the 3hrs since I wrote this article, did kid pickup, made dinner, had a phone call — an entire neighborhood burned down and people were abandoning their cars and running for their lives and bulldozers were pushing through cars to make space for the fire trucks www.fastcompany.com/91256483/the...

Santa Ana Wind (SAW) driven fires do occur in January but typically are not large and damaging. Figure below shows number of SAW fires for 1950-2020. These SAW fires are driven by wind speed and drought. www.publish.csiro.au/WF/WF23190

With the Eaton and Palisades Fires destroying likely hundreds of homes, a reminder that SoCal's worst firestorms involve multiple fires stretching resources thin. If you live anywhere near these fires (or any new ones), DO NOT WAIT for someone to knock/tell you to leave. Be Prepared and Go Early!

Excited to share our newest synthesis paper where we review studies that have used real fires and 'fire-proxies' to better understand fire-induced tree mortality. We also highlight recent advances in pyroecophysiology. www.publish.csiro.au/WF/WF24136

My friend feeling the good vibrations inside an ancient redwood. #firescarfriday #savetheredwoods 🌎🌲🍁🔥

In 2024, wildfires burned a record number of forests participating in California's forest offset program, exposing the danger of relying on forests to slow climate change. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Looking for a scientist or two (ideally not busy with AGU!) who can speak to what the science says about winter wildfires in CA, and if we should expect more of them due to climate change. If that's you or someone you know, lmk! 🔥

Will be talking about #fuel & extreme #firebehaviour at the next NERO webinar nero-network.eu/news/nero-ne...
