I can't say that all faculty hires were done that way, but I'm fairly confident that most were.

Typically, during the interview phase the best stands out and that was never influenced by those issues. You typically want to hire someone who does great work, is going to be a good colleague and who can think on their feet. There is always a clear choice.

On those that I served on, we shortlisted a "representative" sample of the pool, at least in terms of sex. But to be honest anyone in the top 20% are excellent on paper. When you have 200 applicants and you short list 6 you can have the cream of the crop and satisfy this.

No. Science funding is under siege everywhere except in China. Someone was asking me if Canada would poach top researchers, and my answer was that we can't even fund he ones we have!

I think that many on the right amplified any pronouncements from radical activists for their own political gain. Note that I'm not saying that there weren't political activists, but that their "influence" was much smaller than it really was.

Right now the US is cutting off its own nose to spite itself. Slashing NSF and NIH science funding is guaranteeing that future US bows down to future China.
