It's a very early season for butterflies (but that may be ok!) I've written a little story about it. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary (Boloria selene) on #Dartmoor yesterday

A smart Common Heath (Ematurga atomaria) that was resting on a Dorset heath on Saturday. #teammoth

Quality moths on an enjoyable evening with Durwyn in Wareham Forest, including Ringed Carpet, Scarce Prominent & Dingy Mocha among 50+ species by midnight. #teammoth

Happy to find my first ever Caryocolum viscariella (Campion Groundling) today in Dorset. Been looking for this one for a while. Fabulous to bump into @martinswarren.bsky.social just afterwards too. #teammoth

Since last year, the rapidly expanding UK distribution of Pachyrhabda steropodes (Fern Signaller) seems to have reached my south Devon garden. A thriving colony was dancing over the ferns at dusk yesterday. #teammoth

Beautiful adult Bucculatrix maritima (Saltern Tuft) emerged today from a larva I found a few weeks ago on Sea Aster. (Also v impressed with the camera in my new iPhone) #teammoth

Last night of moth trapping in Sweden and another Tau Emperor, plus a lifer in the form of Red-headed Chestnut #teammoth

Today’s wonder from the Swedish moth trap - Reed Dagger (Simyra albovenosa), a species I’ve never seen in the UK #teammoth

Wow!! 🤩 Tau Emperor (Aglia tau) in the moth trap in rural Sweden 🇸🇪 - the first I’ve ever seen. #teammoth

Not seen any butterflies/moths since we arrived in Stockholm, but lovely to see a few of these fellas

Powdered Quaker from last weekend’s mothing in Cornwall. I usually only see one a year so always nice to catchup with this species. #teammoth

It’s that time of year again, when little grey moths loaf around in the sunshine on the petals of Greater Stichwort flowers: Coleophora lutarea Stitchwort Flower Moth. #teammoth

A new species for me yesterday on the Cornish coast - larva of the rare Nothris congressariella Cornish Snout on the uncommon Balm-leaved Figwort. #teammoth

Moth trapping continues to be v poor, but Lackey caterpillars were enjoying the sunshine on the Cornish coast today. #teammoth

Yellow-barred Brindle today on the Menin Gate at Ieper (Ypres) 🇧🇪 #teammoth

Pammene argyrana Oak Gall Moth was a new moth for me recently. Two came to light in a Dartmoor oakwood. Like other similar moth species, its caterpillars live in galls made by other insects. #teammoth

Found my first ever Bucculatrix maritima (Saltern Tuft) larvae last week. A nationally scarce moth species associated with Sea Aster. #teammoth

Other UK butterflies that bucked the trend of a dreadful 2024, were Marsh Fritillary & Chequered Skipper. Both dropped back from higher population levels in 2023, but remained above average. Marsh Fritillary did particularly well in Northern Ireland (3rd best year) but poorly in Wales (3rd worst).

Success in my first attempt to rear moths from mines in oak leaves that were still on trees in Leicestershire in late Feb. This Phyllonorycter heegeriella (Pale Oak Leaf-miner) emerged today and is a lifer for me (although a bit beyond my photography skills). #teammoth

The recording of the UK Butterfly Recorders meeting is out! You can catch up on the release of the 2024 UKBMS results, plus lots of other interesting butterfly talks. Watch it here -

The reintroduced Large Blue (Phengaris arion) also had another good year in 2024. While numbers were down compared to the very high levels in 2023, the counts were still well above average & the 9th best since monitoring began in 1983. www.ukbms.org (📷Neil Hulme)
