Somewhat defeatist note in the manual of the minivan we rented.

Up at Schulman Grove, CA, today, amongst the ancient Bristlecone Pine trees with our @durhamearthsci.bsky.social MSci students. The trees, the oldest living organsims on the planet, have silently witnessed many civilisations rise and fall.

Found a rock naturally shaped like a sword. Big win.

Fast approaching my 6th decade and thinking a lot about time. Here, ~60000 years of geologic time is unevenly spread through the layers. The grey Plinian pumice layers together represent ~15 days, max: very short periods of intense change. The other 59999.9 years are locked up in the orange soils.
