I really enjoyed this episode of the @TransitionShow.mastodon.energy.ap.brid.gy podcast with @richardlowes.bsky.social, thanks for the @openenergymon.bsky.social heatpumpmonitor.org mention, "brings an element of fun into heatpumps" 😁

Some thoughts on the @theCCCuk's 7th carbon budget report heat and buildings recommendations: www.linkedin.com/posts/richar...

Half of all homes need heat pumps by 2040 and 'we see no role for hydrogen in buildings heating', from the just published 7th carbon budget report from the Climate Change Committee www.theccc.org.uk/publication/...

My second appearance on GB news with Jacob Rees-Mogg www.linkedin.com/posts/richar...

On the lie that net zero is damaging UK energy security www.linkedin.com/posts/richar...

“The emissions from heat are starting to stand out like a sore thumb” as other sectors decarb. Great pod with my colleague @richardlowes.bsky.social xenetwork.org/ets/episodes...

“there are Neville Chamberlain’s in every generation” George Monbiot’s takedown of Matt Goodwin and the Reform party is a thing of beauty 👏 #bbcqt

This is absolutely bonkers and quite frankly dangerous stuff from the Reform Party. Even if you were the most rabid climate change denier (which they are), you might have at least thought about energy security (and the recent gas price crisis) and innovation in markets.

Super chuffed to have been interviewed for the @transitionshow.bsky.social on clean heating, heat pumps and policy. I think it's a really neat overview of the issues at play. Thanks for having me @chrisnelder.bsky.social!

There are obvious efficiency reasons to have more local electricity markets in GB. It's mad that we currently have situations of excess renewable electricity in one part of the country and gas generation elsewhere but with a flat price across GB. renews.biz/98640/ofgem-... (1/2)

Is 2025 the end of the road for hydrogen boilers? I certainly hope so. My new briefing today looks at hydrogen heating - and why Labour needs to rule it out ASAP if they want to keep energy bills down. 🧵 www.e3g.org/publications... 🔌💡

We have a new peer review journal article, published last week, on UK heat pump costs, drivers and how costs can be brought down. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Can anyone help with the specifics (not speculation please) of why Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) sometimes gives a score for hybrids which is better than standalone heat pumps?

How has Denmark grown District heating? @soxenaar.bsky.social has the answers for you.

US LNG imports come with very significant additional (perhaps worse than coal) greenhouse gas emissions associated with extraction (leaky shale) and transportation (liqufactiin, shipping, venting etc). Why Europe will struggle to buy more US gas - on.ft.com/3PGc60F via @FT

Despite some limited respite in fossil gas prices last year, UK wholesale gas prices remain significantly higher than long term averages and last month, reached their highest ever level, outside the 2021-2023 crisis.

The issue of reduced fine levels for Clean Heat Market Mechanism has been raised in Parliament - government believes these won't affect scheme outcomes, probably because 1st year was always about tracking/testing. What happens next, still unknown. questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-ques...

I was on LBC yesterday talking about the to be honest quite shameless 'concerningly low' levels of gas storage press release from Centrica, all part of their lobbying campaign for more gas storage subsidy. Full comment and recording is on linked-in: www.linkedin.com/posts/richar...

This would be a super interesting role on clean heating finance.

There had previously been an aspiration to end the sale of gas boilers by 2035 but nothing was legally in force. However, without such an end date, which can provide long-term market direction, it is unclear how decarbonising heating by 2050 will happen. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Happy new year from the ridiculously beautiful Isle of Skye! Sea, snowy mountains, blue skies and heat pumps! No flying either!

UKERC's annual review of energy policy is out today. It's a really good read. Great to see attention being paid to the issue of retiring the UK's gas grid.

I have written to @ClaireCoutinho to request clarification on some strange inconsistencies between her position on heat pump policy as Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, and her position shadowing the same role.

Isn't that incredible.

Dutch Senate has now also approved the bill. With this, proposal now becomes law and Dutch municipalities can put an end to the gas network as the final piece of a coordinated heat transition.

Used to think the maddest outcome of UK energy privatisation was getting the French state to build nukes for the UK state but now surely it's gotta be autocratic state wealth funds owning chunks of network infrastructure. WHAT COULD GO WRONG!?

Jessica Britton and myself have been considering energy governance in the UK, that is, how all the bits of policy and regulation work together. With recent developments around RESP and NESO, the case for reform is stronger then ever. (1/2)

I'm a pannelist on this @BusinessGreen and @EQUANS_Official webinar today on 'Decarbonising heat: one of the biggest challenges organisations face on the path to net zero' at 11:30. Come along webinars.businessgreen.com/decarbonisin...

🚨I have a big announcement, everyone!!🚨 Today, I'm launching my newsletter: The Reengineer. It’s about the surprising ways in which climate change is impacting technology, buildings and infrastructure – and how we can make those things more efficient, to slash emissions. www.thereengineer.pro

Seeing some claims that the Clean Heat Market Mechanism will put up boiler prices by £120. This was a lie last year as I wrote for @Installer365 and it's an even bigger lie now. Worrying to see such disinformation esp. during climate negotiations at COP. www.installeronline.co.uk/green-energy...

Lots on heat pumps and buildings from UK government today including. -1m planning rule gone by 'early next year'. -Clean Heat Market Mechanism coming in but with only £500 fines 'in year 1'. Good on planning but I don't think a £500 fine will do owt... www.gov.uk/government/n...
