Sunday Conversations 1. Out yesterday on Sidings estate, listening to residents, including catching up with tenants association chair, Tracey Shackle. Frustration at slow progress on parking; working w/ fellow Labour cllr, Lorna Greenwood to push council officers to get the new controls implemented

On the Clem Attlee estate w/ Hammersmith & Fulham Labour team and Leader, Stephen Cowan, campaigning for Lillie ward by-election candidate, Lydia Paynter. Lots of support and appreciation for Hammersmith & Fulham council's record of delivery, & her fantastic predecessor, @chelfulhamben.bsky.social

A nice freezing cold #Labour winter canvas last night on Sidings estate, with fellow councillor, Lorna Greenwood, and local Camden Labour volunteers. Listening to residents’ concerns on heating failures, and parking controls on the estate. Will push the council to fix the problems.

Great to hear a Labour Deputy PM address LGA Labour local govt conf. #Labour cllrs cheered to hear Angela Rayner: ”Unlike prev Tory govt, Labour sees councils as partners, not punchbags.” ”Lab govt is working with Lab councils to change people’s’ lives. Together we will get Britain building again.”

Camden Council reduces housing repairs backlog and improves tenant satisfaction Camden Council says nearly half of its housing repairs backlog has been dealt with, as it pushes to improve the borough’s stock of social rented homes. A recent report put to the Town Hall’s housing and fire safety…

Great to see #HS2 offering job opportunities to local residents. The ‘bootcamp’ training initiative is a good start. More to come… www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Great to visit Good Work Camden’s Gospel Oak job hub today with cabinet member, Sabrina Francis. Met the team who are doing really valuable work supporting people into work, and three local residents who got jobs through this support. More info on Good Work Camden: goodwork.camden.gov.uk

Nice to see the Community Association of West Hampstead’ sunshine gardens at West Hampstead Thameslink station, in the sunshine. ☀️🪻🪴🌱

Great to meet Stirling Council leader, @gerrymcgarvey, while hosting Scottish Cities Alliance leaders in Camden. A great @ScottishLaboir representative. Wishing him and @LabourStirling’s Yvonne Dickson the best of luck in today’s Bannockburn by-election.

A real pleasure to welcome to Camden, council leaders from Scottish Cities Alliance, to showcase the Somers Town Future Neighbourhoods project; local action tackling the #ClimateEmergency, improving residents' lives, energy and food security. More here: bit.ly/4gbQILr

Really good on the #LabourDoorstep last night with @LornaGreenwood on the Westcroft estate. A freezing cold night but a warm reception from residents. Heard concerns on anti-social behaviour, repairs and broken pavement guttering; casework now underway. Also heard complements on council repairs.

Excellent from @london.gov.uk www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

After my councillor surgery at @Sidingscc this morning, I caught up with the fab @CamdenCouncil mobile health team. 🚐 They’re running free health checks, and vaccines for flu & COVID. 💉❤️🩺 Finishing soon at Sidings but out soon in: -Fitzrovia 22nd Jan -Swiss Cott 27th -Highgate 28th -Belsize 29th

Brilliant night at the Gtech. #Brentford won 2-2! Well, it felt like it. #BREMCI

I agree with the Prime Minister that Tulip Siddiq was right to refer herself to the independent adviser on the ministerial code and I commend her for stepping down as a minister, rather than be a distraction from the important work of the government. 1/2

Great to be at @ucl.ac.uk East to hear Keir Starmer & Science and Tech Sec, Peter Kyle, launch the Govt's #AI Opportunities Action Plan. ✅Govt to ensure AI benefits working people ✅"We will make it easier for tomorrow's talent to develop, here", which is what we are doing in Camden: bit.ly/4aembv2

Great to hear @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social talk about rebuilding the #NHS at #JLMConf25. Particularly pleased to hear him stress how important social care will be to reducing waiting lists and improving health outcomes.

Ground-breaking work by @camdenlabour.bsky.social councillors @sagal-a.bsky.social, Nasrine Djemai, Anna Wright & @camronaref.bsky.social to tackle #homelessness in Camden. First spade in the ground on two new hostels, with 89 units to support people in need of accommodation. bit.ly/4fXayd3

New data from ⁦‪@INRIX‬⁩ highlights London’s continuing #congestion problem. More work needed to shift to public transport and active travel. || London is Europe’s most congested city, with drivers sat in traffic an average 101 hours last year

The intuitive reading of private schools "defy Treasury over fees" would be some kind of protest over paying the VAT. The report estimates fees are up 14% on average rather than 10% to account for 20% VAT. So the Treasury would get 20% of a slightly higher amount, after said defiance of the Treasury

A lot of rich parents are very upset at the government for charging VAT on private school fees. Maybe they should instead ask why private schools have put up fees so far above inflation over the past 15 years. www.ft.com/content/852b...

Encouraging news in @financialtimes1.bsky.social today that our #Labour government is considering public procurement reforms that will enable councils to secure greater social value from the contracts it lets. A boost for #socialenterprises, #cooperatives, #ClimateAction.

As the sanitisation of Reform continues at pace, just remember that in Summer 2024 its leaders chose to fan hatred and conspiracies whilst white nationalist thugs ripped apart neighbourhoods and tried to murder families seeking asylum. www.politico.eu/article/nige...

As Keir Hardie wrote…

If you’re planning to walk off some of that festive feasting here’s some good news. Labour saves 40,000 miles of footpaths and historic rights of way from Tory plans to scrap them.

My announcement on #retrofitting test project for 3,000 Camden council homes, reported in Camden Citizen - lower energy bills for Camden residents and lower carbon emissions. www.camdencitizen.co.uk/2024/12/18/c... Full council report here: democracy.camden.gov.uk/documents/s1...

80% of innovations come from the frontline. And this basically means that the centralised UK state is upside down. How can we get citizens, administrators and representatives to modernise the state in the face of overwhelming complexity? This week's Substack. open.substack.com/pub/anthonyp...

It was lovely to have Rachel Reeves and @allymcgovern.bsky.social in Islington this morning visiting Hillside Clubhouse. Hillside are a wonderful local charity who work with Islington and Camden councils and the local NHS to support people with a mental health diagnosis into work.

Thank you @rachelreeve and @alisonmcgovern for visiting Hillside Clubhouse in Islington to highlight the great work this charity is doing to help people in Camden and Islington overcome barriers to finding and sustaining work.

Today #Labour announced the biggest reforms to employment support for a generation, ie since the last time we had a Labour government. Labour’s red forms will help the millions of people who have been left unemployed or inactive. This is what Labour is doing. 👇

A healthy workforce is essential for all our future prosperity. In that spirit, I raised the issue of mental health support for young people with the Secretary of State. She was up against the clock in Commons and battling a sore throat, but am very glad she agreed with me! youtu.be/g4vtd_hnizs?...

New to BlueSky? The London starter pack will introduce you to Londoners who are working hard on issues affecting our city to make it a safer, fairer and greener place for everyone. See more:

Welcome to Fortune Green, Parrotia persica Vanessa and Carpinus betulus Lucas; newly added to the Mill Lane streetscape, thanks to @CamdenCouncil. 🌳

Poland’s National Day - and another celebration of London’s role in Europe @richardolszewski.bsky.social

A pleasure to attend the Polish Embassy this evening to celebrate Poland’s National Day. Great to meet @drrosena.bsky.social and @MayorOfMerton, Sławek Szczepański.

Having fond memories of my time working behind the scenes with John Prescott as an MPs’ researcher and special adviser. Ignore media focus on pantomime incidents, he was a truly remarkable politician, great to work with and a huge figure in Labour politics.

www.linkedin.com/pulse/sketch... I’m sharing this post I wrote a few years ago about working for John Prescott on LinkedIn. A small flavour of the man. Off to the pub now to meet up with two other former JP advisers so we can remember him together.
