Gatekeeping is never a good thing. In most cases, it's just people guarding something out of a desire to keep it obscure and to feel elite compared to people who don't know about the thing. I struggle to think of a time that gatekeeping is beneficial to fandom or to a scene like vkei.

Exactly! I knew a LOT of people back in the day who felt you had to be "vkei enough" to be called a fan and would make up the most obscure thresholds for that. Silly squabbling between fans of different bands and with different honmei.... I used to put up with it when I was younger but now? Nah.
