for sure!! i guess i was curious, given its publication, like, if people at the time read it or understood it as queer yk?? or was like, that level of "sociability" (hehe) just like, a thing between menfolk at the time. (apparently the original review in the nyt disparaged it for being perverse too)

I find it hard to find the line between noble savage bollocks & genuine respect for Black and Indigenous wisdoms and sensible critique of white Western life ways. Cuz like, I, too, am anti map.

It’s a line that for me holds up, despite it being exoticising and fetishising in context (describing Queequeg’s home) because so far this book is so far is so much about how Christian Western civilisation is at odds with the Spiritual, the soul, the self (imho).

i think it slightly shocked me because looking at it it seems like a word i would know or have come across before but absolutely have not.

moby dick is doing wonders for my vocabulary. not that "imputable" is necessarily a word i needed in the arsenal. like, i would likely use "attributable" (may well have before??) but i like to collect words idk idk.

yes, i didn't even track "impute" until you mentioned it just now. it was clear enough in context but not so clear that i didn't look it up to make sure.

Real. I get hung up on gender. Power is more intuitive to me - off the top of my head I'd say 'ability to enact things'? It's relational, someone's (or something's) place within a system. But for sure, it's nebulous, mutable. It's not at all a concrete, physical things. Vibes based, lol.

Yes, that puts it really succinctly; they have the advantage. It's a simple answer , but it's also a hard one. Because then how do we actually beat them? We have so much to overcome.

I hear this. I try to keep my arguments grounded in material relations. Otherwise I find it too easy to dehumanise the opposition (in my head it becomes - cuz they're fucking evill that's why!). & I think the neurological and psychological components are also undergirded by material relations often.

During the 2021 coup-attempt in the US, I made a, "This could be us but you playing..." joke (us being the Left); and my friend pointed out, "It literally couldn't. These people aren't actually mounting a rebellion because they're already the powers that be."

Rightism is easier, essentially.

Like! It's not hard to win a campaign socially that denigrates & subjugates trans people when we live in a society built on the denigration and subjugation of trans people.
The left truly has more work to do because we are fighting against the more empowered position.

3. Conservatism has a lot more intellectual cohesion (what was, is good; what was is natural (hierarchy, injustice). Leftism, defined more by a committment to social justice, already starts the race off at a disadvanatge: What is justice? How do we achieve that?
