Finally made it over here. Happy to leave the other place behind. News, books, ceramics, cooking, and the generally awful current state of things.

Odds of a recession in the next 12 months when Biden left office: 15% (Moody's) Odds of a recession in the next 12 months as of today: 60% (J.P. Morgan) Trump broke Biden’s booming economy with his tariffs.

A citizen cannot, by definition, be deported. This 2-year-old child was forcibly removed from the country by US officials and sent to Honduras. In a clear violation of the Constitution. And without any consideration of either law or human decency.

Both of these walk backs are very good, and it shows pushback can work. 💪 But our medical establishment has no idea what they are doing. They are making it up as they go.

Toxicologist here! This will improve the health of zero Americans. Current synthetic food dyes are not causing health problems, and are often times used because they are actually safer than natural food dyes. Reminder that guns are the #1 cause of death of children but we are going to ban food dyes.

Republicans in Congress have done a lot wrong, but their unforgivable political sin, in my book, is their conscious decision that making every American's life worse is an acceptable price to pay for not being primaried. They know what Trump is doing to America, and it doesn't matter to them.

It’s weird how you can accomplish things by simply trying to do them

The government isn't doing universities a favor by channeling federal funding through them. It's using a private entity to realize public goals, to accomplish things that benefit the entire nation. You'd think conservatives who call for privatization all the time would grasp that.

Why are elected politicians being granted anonymity to dehumanize the victims of state oppression? What’s the journalistic value?

Gotta say, I am not encouraged that SCOTUS has not yet resolved the El Salvador kidnapping case.

I took this photo last summer outside Dachau, the first concentration camp, located outside Munich in Germany. Did you know that it started as a prison for people who disagreed with the government?

He has never acted rationally. But rational people kept constructing rational edifices to explain his behavior.

In just two months, DOGE has —lost— the government an estimated half a trillion dollars. I propose that Musk pay it back personally.

I mean, true, but not by changing statutory rates...

Trump has done the same damage to our health, environment and security as to our markets, it's just that there isn't a stock ticker that measures the impact so clearly

Here’s what RFK Jr. has done since a measles outbreak began which has killed 3 people so far: 1. Buried a CDC report showing need for vaccination 2. Recommended vitamin A, resulting in liver damage in kids 3. Defunded vaccination clinics nationally 4. Hired a fraud to manipulate vaccine data

Indeed!

WaPo is talking about invading another country like it's a business plan.

I feel like this tweet did not get enough attention this week

This is a very important point. Breathlessly vague headlines and summaries of these executive orders created for the executive powers it does not have. This kind of press contributed to authoritarian regime change.

I am BEGGING people to frame this properly. The issue here is not one colossal blunder where a reporter got info. The issue is it’s clear these people are all routinely ignoring the most absolutely basic security protocols, and WE HAVE NO IDEA what breaches this has already enabled.

"According to Haspel, the system also wrongly treats childcare like a market good, akin to a gym membership or a meal at a restaurant, instead of a social good, like a fire dept or school. “The economic model doesn’t work... because we’ve miscast the service as an individual commodity,” he said."

Has any new drug saved your life or the life of someone you know? If so, you can thank the NIH, which Trump and Musk are illegally destroying, in violation both of the law creating the NIH, and appropriations laws telling NIH what money to spend and how

For those bloviating about how Ukraine has to accept a difficult, unjust peace, a reminder: russia does NOT offer peace, it offers negotiated surrender.

My area of research is convict leasing. In the USA, when labor is forced outside of a punishment, such as before a guilty verdict, it is called slavery. This isn’t hyperbole…

This is horrifying.

There are just countless examples of this. But how much do you think the three or four dozen people who work at DOGE know about dams? it's not like building something from IKEA. Fairly technical issue. But they decide what staffing is needed. Analogs across breadth of federal govt.

"A survey of over 100,000 Germans revealed that 94% won’t buy a Tesla vehicle." lol electrek.co/2025/03/14/t...

To be clear, the US Institute of Peace is not part of the government.

Trump's government is struggling to track bird flu and contact its own nuclear weapons inspectors but is micromanaging college disciplinary committees?

The subject of the next round of constituent calls?

At ANY moment, the GOP could have worked with Dems to draft a passable bill. But no; they drafted one that lets Trump & Musk continue gutting the federal gov’t & deprives Congress of authorized powers. Dems are right to vote no on cloture, to protect all Americans. A shutdown is squarely on the GOP.

This is fantastic *and* I want to know who's funding it so I can give them some money because they're actually Doing Something

When I say "no more old white men in charge," Tim Walz is excluded.

This is our country now. www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/...

Keep calling your Senators. It's not over.

It's literally painful to grant that Chris "let's skip impeachment witnesses so we can get home for Valentine's Day" Coons did something good but

This isn’t about fixing bureaucracy in Washington. This is about defunding your local public school. amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/03/...

DOCUMENT DESTRUCTION: My reporter Brett Murphy obtained a remarkable directive to folks at USAID: Empty the safes with the classified and personnel records and then, "Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break."
