Pretty patriotic today. Lots of American flags, and a member of the military is leading the crowd in The Pledge of Allegiance. "We took an oath to this country, not to a king."

That is 54, 5-year NIH biomedical research grants. Or 270 years worth of biomedical research.

Yesterday's wonderful visit to @mdibiolab.bsky.social was capped off with a hike with my host Dr. Emily Spaulding! Her science is fabulous - can't wait to catch up again soon in Davis at Worm Meeting!

I was already psyched about my visit to @mdibiolab.bsky.social to give a talk tomorrow. The fact that my journey here included a golden hour flight up the Maine Coast was just icing on the cake!

Buck is the type of PI you want to work for! Apply to join the team!

Looks like the wave of terminations is finally coming from the NIA. My excellent student, who was supposed to be funded until August of 2026, just received notice of termination complete with the trash language that has been coming along with them. It is so unfair to these exceptional young people.

I commented and you should too!

Just imagine, folks, if you: a) busted your ass to make it to grad school b) developed a research program incredible enough to earn a F31, only to see it terminated b/c you are URM c) applied for a HHMI Hannah Gray, only to see the program canceled This is evil, hurtful, resegregation of science

Deciding to keep myself in the dark about Sinners as much as possible until I was able to go watch it today was the right choice. Great movie. Go see it on the big screen if you can.

Supposedly temporary, but I will believe it when I see it reposted, likely with some awful nonsense updates. I would love to be proven wrong on this one.

Decided to ruin my Friday by confirming that the parent F funding announcements really did expire yesterday.

As a follow-up to the Kaiser interview, here is my exchange with Dr. Bhattacharya starting Sunday evening... 1/n

Gave a talk at my parents’ retirement community to describe how science is done, and what is at stake. There was a ton of interest, and anyone can do this. Get the word out about how science affects everyone. I’m happy to share slides with anyone who asks- just get in touch! youtu.be/BY_SFgi-Cig

Excited to see this out in @science.org today!! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

@katyamack.bsky.social @phiferrixey.bsky.social et al. studied GxE interactions in wild-derived inbred strains of house mice from N. and S. America, finding strain-specific responses to high-fat diets and widespread condition-specific gene regulation. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/molb... #molbio #evobio

I am so proud of Gen for writing this. I am sharing it widely and encourage you all to do the same!

Harvard redid its whole homepage to push back against the administration’s demands. I mean, this is just a website but I think it’s kind of a great PR move: www.harvard.edu

🚨 We’re hiring postdocs! Join our lab in Houston to study human disease using stem cell models, functional genomics, and big genomic data. Wet & dry lab backgrounds welcome. Please email me if you're interested ([email protected]) or apply directly: jobs.bcm.edu/job/Postdoct... 📩

It's getting buried, but Houston will almost certainly not have representation in Congress until January 2027. Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner died nearly a month ago and Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott has simply decided not to call a special election to fill the seat.

These programs are so important and I encourage us all to push our institutions too develop and communicate their plans to appeal these terminations

Multiple here in Colorado as well. @jeremymberg.bsky.social

My co-mentored student's Diversity F31 was just terminated. I don't have words (actually I have a lot of them, all curse -type).

Booker, after speaking for more than 24 hours and breaking Thurmond's record, is still standing and still speaking--using his time to warn his colleagues and his country about the dangers of defunding universities and defunding scientific research.

After 24 hours on his feet, Cory Booker is defending the scientific research establishment of this country - calling out an experience like the one that drives me and SO MANY of my fellow scientists to do the work we do - that maybe we can do for others what we couldn't for our own loved ones.

Booker sets a record and then starts talking about funding for postdocs and grad students ♥️♥️♥️

Dev found my clip! I'm C-span famous! 😜 But seriously - NIH supports the next generation of scientists not only in academia but in pharma, in regulatory affairs, in K-12 education. Cutting NIH training grants will cut deep.

This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.

F mechanisms are student and postdoc fellowships. This is the US choking off funding for training the next generation of talent. Where is the university leadership response?

How do I even put "my doctoral students could not achieve their full scientific potential because they had to worry ICE would abduct them off the street while getting to lab" into a tenure impact statement?

I could not be more excited to have our lab's first story online where we report our discovery that HDACs ~reverse~ their activity to ADD acyl groups to lysine! We found this for our favorite ketone body, BHB, but this pathway controls other lysine modifications too!🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Just received the email that my recent appointment to a BSC, which was supposed to be until June 2029, was terminated effective immediately.

New preprint, very proud of this one www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Hey SUFS Community! If you fall into one of the following categories and are willing to talk to press (on or off the record), please comment/DM us: 1. Had a funded grant revoked 2. Are considering moving abroad to continue your research 3. Have been impacted by the stoppage of a clinical trial

Our university’s NIH CTSA (Clinical and Translational Science Award) was just cancelled for having some keywords that just mean it will serve ALL people in Utah. This funds research that moves discovery science into clinical therapies. This is literally the mandate of the NIH! 😰 🧪
