I'm watching Twin Peaks for the first time, part way through season 2, and the drop off in quality is sharp.
but like a 3rd of every episode is so amazing I keep watching, and I know that the return is supposed to be amazing

My most jarring experience is reading Niven, starting with the short stories where women basically don't exist, to Ringworld where it is clear that the author REALLY doesn't like women.

I 100% agree with this take. it's not that there isn't good stuff in those old books, but it's quite often buried under other issues, misogyny most of all.

Maybe try some Sci-Fi, I read Dune at that age after reading Discworld and Tolkien.
I also second other comments suggesting Small Gods as the best Discworld starter.

This is the complete opposite of true! Stock you reduce to concentrate the flavour, Homeopathy you dilute to increase the effectiveness. Jokes are well and good, but stock is a wonderful thing that should not be lumped in with that nonsense :)
