Disney+ being a case in point. That app has less reliability than a Samsung washing machine

That almost always takes me to a product page or manual site from which I can get the make/model and then a PDF of the manual. From there I can find the "Troubleshooting" section and then usually some lookup table of what those blink codes mean.
All of this takes place in about 5 minutes.

I ask for the make/model of the appliance - if they don't know I ask for a photo, then start searching for "Kenmore washer yellow soap drawer"(etc.) until I get something that looks vaguely similar.

I often get DMs or tagged in the neighborhood group chat (where I'm seen as some kind of magic appliance whisperer) and it's inevitably some variation on "Help! My <appliance> isn't working. It doesn't turn on it's just flashing one of the lights at me and then turns off again!"

I appreciated your bit about using google to find info about the radio from a picture. Lots of people these days seem not to know how to diagnose and fix things themselves and/or lack the fundamentals knowledge to do so.

Yep. I recently had to replace all my 30 year old appliances with modern ones that you have to connect to Wi-Fi to use. I hate it.

As an SWE I was hoping this was going to be a dig at the increasing(and unnecessary) computerization of appliances and other stuff that could easily be done electro-mechanically.
All of my old appliances wore out a year or two back and I had to replace them with "smart" ones due to lack of parts

UPDATE:
Welp, it's cold AF outside and while the control board does fall back the the gas furnace below 30F, the heat pump(when called for) comes on and performs pretty damn well. Complete wIith a nice steam show periodically.
10/10.

I realize "clean your fridge air intake" is hardly a bombshell finding
But I was surprised at the difference it made. I figured I had nothing to lose but a few minutes of time so I managed to avoid buying an new fridge using a vacuum cleaner and this one weird old trick

Did you ever get into software defined radio? It seems like something you'd enjoy.... AND you can use it to pick up the 900MHz signals your utility meters send and track event usage. Hows THAT for a technology connection?

Weirdly, my home insurance didn't go down, which.... you'd think it would considering that I don't have a 2000°F burning in my basement most of the time to keep warm.... But what do I know, I'm not an insurance company

As a bonus I get to go to bed now not worrying that tonight is going to be the night my CO alarms wake me up. Constant worry about that and watching the flame color on my old furnace did a lot of damage to my mental health ðŸ˜ðŸ¤£

Been happy with it so far. We had a (correctly sized) 2 stage gas furnace fitted as the backup heat source rather than electric heat strips(I know I know... "bUt sOmEtiMes" ...) but we haven't had to use it since it was fitted. Eager to see how it performs though the winter.
